During the war, France operated 3 armored (1,2,5th) and 9 infantry (1, 1 Mot, 2 Moroccan, 3 Algerian, 4 Moroccan Mountain, 9 Colonial, 10h, 14th and 27th Alpine). I'm curious, what was the French army's organization in the immidiate post war period - 1945-1948 let's say?

All these divisions were disbanbed in 1945-1946 with the 1st 10th 14th 27th,1st & 2nd Armored
The 9th Colonial was sent in Indochina with the newly-created 3rd Colonial.
The 5th Armored remained in Germany.

Were the disbanded divisions reduced to demi-brigades, or eliminated completely? The total seems rather low for a country of 80 million people.

The divisions were scattered in Armoured "Groupements" & Groupements d'Infanterie in France & Germany.
The 24th Airborne,renumbered 25th,and just "Airborne Division"in 1946
The 27th Alpine became a Mountain Groupement
The 2nd(France) & 4th (Germany)renamed "motorized infantry division"
The 1st(Mot./former Free French) & 3rd were disbanded too.

A new 1st Armored Division was created in 1949.
