Question: At the time of his murder, the "Headless Thompson Gunner" was fighting in what conflict?

.
I once was told that I was vain, but I knew that vanity was a fault, so I gave it up because I have no faults.

Hint: His name was Roland and after his murder he was known as "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner."

Missed this one! The Norwegian mercenary who struck a deal in Denmark and fought in Africa... :D
I have the album and know the lyrics so I say Warren Zevon and the Congo Crisis/Biafra.
Roland was a warrior from the land of the midnight sun
With his Thompson gun for hire, fighting to be done
The deal was made in Denmark on a dark and stormy day
So he set out for Biafra to join the bloody fray

A no picture question : this man left his studies to enlist in the U.S. Navy, where he trained spotters to distinguish Allied planes from those of the Axis, and he served as a spotter himself in the naval assaults on Sicily, Salerno, and Anzio. After the war, he resumed his studies and became a very important philosopher in the U.S..
