Missed this one! The Norwegian mercenary who struck a deal in Denmark and fought in Africa...
I have the album and know the lyrics so I say Warren Zevon and the Congo Crisis/Biafra.

A no picture question : this man left his studies to enlist in the U.S. Navy, where he trained spotters to distinguish Allied planes from those of the Axis, and he served as a spotter himself in the naval assaults on Sicily, Salerno, and Anzio. After the war, he resumed his studies and became a very important philosopher in the U.S..
