50 years of Sidewinders, development history and usage ?

I recently read the AIM-9 Sidewinder made its first successful interception on September 11, 1953, when it downed a Hellcat drone. This made me a bit curious on the development history of this weapon. I have also been looking for information on usage. Which aircraft types used/use which versions of the Sidewinder ? Air forces which had/has it in their inventories etc. ?
