What was the most terrible War

#1

Post by Benoit Douville » 19 Sep 2003, 02:32

What do you think was the most terrible War in History in terms of savagery, brutality and the conditions.

My vote goes for World War I. The War in the trenches was terrible, mustard gas, bombardment in the trenches. A lot of brave young men died for absolutely nothing during that War, only for some yards. Unbelievable!

Most terrible war: WWII

Most unnecessary war: WWI or the Spanish American War.

Most stupid war: The American Civil War.

War that accomplished the least: War of 1812 or the Korean War.

War in which we should never have been involved: Viet Nam.

All my personal opinions, of course.

"Don't speak to me of atrocities. War is an atrocity."

The Hundred-Years war.

WWI was senseless, and bloody and it cause WWII to occur.

If I remember right, In terms of death per capita, the War of Northern Aggression , a.k.a. The Civil War, was the bloodiest war in history.

Apart from the fact that ALL wars are horrible,WWI&II are the bloodiest in terms of numbers, but when it comes to savagery, few things would beat the Russian Civil War.

You are totally right. I have forgotten about this one. I have a book concerning this war, written by Polish traveller Kapuscinski.
However, we must remember, that football match was only a pretext
for this war, since these two countries were rivals and enemies for decades.

The French Religious wars of the 16th century, for cruelty and savagery. The ST Bartholoews day massacre of 10,000 plus Protestants being a prime example of the senseless violence religous bigots can stir up.

The (big) war with the most unexpected concequenceses:

The Ottoman-Persian-Mamluc war. The Ottomans (then rullig parts ot todays Turky) were in war with the Persians. the Mamluc Sultan (sitting in Cairo and Rulling large perts of the Middle East) foolishly got involved in that war (that was taking part far in the north) and within a short time, lost his entire kingdom, and by that formed the 400 years Ottoman empire.

With wars from distant history (the crusades, the Mongols and such), you must remember to take them in the context of the times, and not apply modern logic to them. Judge the people involved by their own moral standards and not by our modern ones. This way you'll gain a better understanding of the causes of things such as the crusades and the like.
