I´ve been always very interested by the swedish regiments history. I can see that regiments fought with courage and distintion in great battles like Lutzen, Breitenfeld, Neva etc.
I am 50% czech and in Olomouc when I was child my granfather told me the history of the Swedish army in our city, still there is a swedish bomb, everybody can see.
It is a pity the old regiments (The "old" lions) were disbanded now.
Yes the Swedish Armies once even stod at the Gates of the Czech Capital Prague, but didn't manage to capture the City before the Messages proclaming the Westphalian Peace Treaty had been signed arrived.

I totaly agree that it is a shame that centuries old Regiments now are disbanded because of Budget cuts.

I 5 Royal Jämtland Field-Jaeger Regiment
Traces its origins to The Ångermanland-Medelpad and Jämtland Regiment raised 16 Jan 1646. This Regiment was disbanded in 1661. Some parts however remained in the Swedish Pommerania until 1670, when they formed the cadre of the new Jämtland Foot Regiment. In 1689 the Regiment became the Jämtland Dragoon Regiment, only one company was ever mounted. In 1820 the title was changed to the present. On 25 May 1853 the mounted company became independent as the Jämtland Mounted Rifle Corps and will be dealt with later. I 5 was disbanded on 31 Dec 1997 but was reformed on 1 June 2000.

Regimental Motto: För Sveriges ära, för Sveriges makt, över berg, över dal, skallar Jämtlands jakt = the motto in Swedish translates freely as: For the Glory of Sweden, for the Might of Sweden, across Mountains, across Valleys the Hunt of Jämtland sounds. Taken from the famous Swedish author Esaias Tegnér's Song to the Jämtland Field-Jaegers written 1821.

Battle Honour: Nowodowor 1655.

The Regiment received its latest Colours from the hands of H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf on 24 Aug. 1996.

Garrison: Östersund

Allied "Regiment": The Savon Brigade of the Finnish Army.

I 6 Royal Västgöta Regiment
Traces its origins to the Horse Sqns raised in the County of Västergötland during the 16th Century. In 1628 they where united to form Västgöta Cavalry Regiment. In 1792 the Regiment became Dragoons and in 1802 received the title Västgöta Line-Dragoon Regiment and in 1806 the word Line was dropped from the title. In 1811 the Regiment lost its Horses and became a Infantry Regiment, at the same time receiving its final title. A victim of defence cuts the Regiment was disbanded 31 Dec. 1927. Its tradition are guarded by the Royal Skaraborg Regiment, a armoured Regiment.

I 7 Royal Karlskrona Grenadier Regiment
Raised in 1902 by amalgamating No. 7 Royal Småland Grenadier Corps and No. 30 Royal Blekinge Battalion. In 1928 the Regiment was united with the Royal Kronoberg Regt. but continued as the later Regiment's III Bn. in Karlskrona. This bn. was finaly disbanded in 1939.

No 7. Royal Småland Grenadier Corps formed 1812 as the Infantry Bn. of the Småland Dragoon Regt. In 1824 the Bn. became The Småland Grenadier Bn. and in 1888 received its last name.

No. 30 Royal Blekinge Bn. Raised in 1886.

The Regiment used the colours originaly presented to the Royal Småland Grenadier Corps by H.M. King Oscar I. Which in 1885 had been renovated. The Royal Kronoberg Regiment continued to parade this Colours anlong side its own until they became to worn out in 1956.

I 8 Royal Uppland Regiment
Traces its origins back to the various armed bands recruited in the County of Uppland during the 16th Century. They where later brought together into one Regiment, which in 1626 was divided into three of which one became the Royal Uppland Regiment. During the years 1904-1928 the Regiment was named the Royal Uppland Infantry Regiment in order to distinguish it from the Royal Uppland Artillery Regiment. On 1 April 1957 the Royal Uppland Regiment was disbanded and its traditions transfered to S 1 Royal Uppland Signals Regiment.

I 11 Royal Kronoberg Regiment
Traces its origins back to the 16th Century and the various bands of Foot troops raised in the County of Småland. They later formed a large Regiment which in 1623 was divided into two: Royal Kronoberg Regt. and Royal Kalmar Regiment. The Regiment was disbanded on 24 Aug. 1997, but its traditions lived on in the territorial staff unit the Kronoberg Group.

I 12 Royal Jönköping Regiment
Traces its origins back to the 16th Century, the first records dates to the year 1563. On 1 Jan. 1928 it was amalgamated with the Royal Kalmar Regt. to form the Royal Jönköping-Kalmar Regt. On 1 July 1948 the regimental title was changed to Royal North Småland Regt, the North designation was droped on 1 July 1997. The Regiment was disbanded on 30 June 2000 and its traditions was transfered to the Royal Göta Engineer Regt.

Carabineer Regiment "Prince Badouin/Boudewijn" - Grenadier Regt.
This Regiment was formed on 27 Sept. 1992 by amalgamating Carabineer Regt. "Prince Badouin" (raised 27 Sept. 1830) with the 1st Grenadier Regt. (raised 8 May 1837).

Battle Honours: Veldtocht 1914-1918 (a.k.a. World War I), Antwerpen-Ijzer, Tervate, Steenstraat-Westrozebeke, Passendale-Rumbeke, Slag van België 1940.
The Colours are decorated with a Fourragere in the colours of the Order of Leopold 2nd Class.
Motto (of the Carbineer regt.): Parvi sed magni
Garrison: Leopoldsburg

Liberation Regiment - 5th Line Infantry Regiment
Formed on 27 June 1992 by amalgamating the two Regiments.

Battle Honours: from the 5th LIR - Veldtocht 1914-1918, Antwerpen, Lombardsijde, Yzer/Oostrozebeke and from the Lib. Bde/Regt. - Normandie, Kanal van Wessem.
Garrison: Leopoldsburg.

12th Line Inf. Regt. "Prince Leopold" - 13th Line Inf. Regt
The 12th Line Inf. Regt. was raised on 31 March 1831 and in 1984 received the Supplumentary title honouring the Prince's service in the Regiment. The 13th Line inf. Regt. was raised in 1874. The two regiments was united in 1993.

Battle Honours: Liege, Anvers, Dixmunde, Yser, Merckem, Stadenberg, La Lys, Campange 1914-1918, La Lys 1940.

Ardennes Rifles Regiment
Raised on 13 Oct. 1839 as the 2nd Namur Regiment, which on 25 Nov. 1830 became the 10th Line Infantry Regiment. The Regiment received the title Ardennes Rifle regiment on 10 March 1933, which in 1934 was divided in to 1st-3rd Ardennes Rifles Bns. In 1994 the 2nd and 3rd Bns was disbanded and the 1st Bn became a Regiment.

Battle Honours:Namur, Termonde, Yser, Eesen, Cortemarck, Ardennes, Dendre, Vinkt. The first three are WW I battles and the last three WW II.

The Colours are decorated with the Order of Leopold and the French Croix de Guerre.
Garrison: Marche-en-Flamenne

1st Carabineer Cyclist Regiment
This Regiment now seems to have been disbanded.

Battle Honours: Campange 1914-1918, Halen, Antwerpen, Ijer, Riegersvliet, Wippelghem, Winterbeek, Knesselaere. The two last names are for World War II.
Garrison: Spich, Germany

2nd Carabineer Cyclist Regiment
Raised 28 Jan. 1915 and united with the School of Infantry (raised 14 Apr. 1879) on 1 July 1994.

Battle Honours: School of Infantry - Veldtocht 1914-1918, Namen, Dendermonde, Ijzer/Eessen, Kortemarck.
2nd Carabineer Cyclists - Veldtocht 1914-1918, Antwerpen, Reigersvliet, Rapenburg, Ijzer, De Gete-De Leie 1940.

The Colours of the School of Infantry are decorated with a Fourragere in the colours of the Order of Leopold and the 2nd Carabineer Cyclists with Fourrageres in the colours of the Order of Leopold and Belgian Croix de Guerre 1940.
Garrison: Arlon.

1st Parachute Battalion, part of the Para Commando Brigade.
Traces its origins back to the Belgian SAS Sqn raised in Britain in 1942. After World War II it became the Parachute Regiment.

Battle Honours: Normandie, Belgique, Ardennes, Emden, Oldenburg.
The Colour was originaly given to the Parachute Regiment on 22 Nov. 1946 also carries a Fourragere in the Colours of the Order of Leopold and also the French Croix de Guerre.
Motto: Who dares wins. The same as Brittish SAS which hints of the roots of the battalion.
Garrison: Diest

2nd Commando Battalion, part of the Para Commando Brigade
Traces its origins to the 4th (Belgian) Troop of the No 10 (Inter-Allied) Commando raised in Britain during World War II. In 1952 the Bn. bacame part of the Para-Commando Regiment, which later became a Brigade.

Battle Honours: Italie (Italy), Joegoslavie (Yugoslavia), Walcheren.
Motto: United we conquer
Garrison: Namur

3rd Parachute Battalion, part of the Para Commando Brigade.
Formed from the detachments of the 1st Para Bn. och 2nd Commando Bn. in Belgian Congo in 1955. It was active during the clashes around the Independence of Belgian Congo in 1960. The Bn. was bestowed the traditions of the Belgian Battalion who fought alongside the UN forces in Corea.

Battle Honours: Ijmin, Haktong-Ni, Chatkol, Campange de Corée 1951-1953.

1st Lancers Regiment
Raised 1814 as Chevau-légers and became 1st Lancers on 24 Oct. 1830.

Garrison: Marche-en-Famenne

Formed on 17 June 1994 by amalgamating 2nd Lancers (raised 27 nov. 1830) and 4th Lancers (raised as 2nd Cuirassiers on 16 June 1836 and became Lancers on 1 Jan. 1863).

Battle Honours: Campange 1914-1918, Liege-Haelen-Anvers, Beveren (Roeselare), Wippelghem, La Gete, Zwijindrecht, La Lys,

2nd Mounted Rifles Regiment
Raised in October 1830. Today the Regiment are a battlefield information sqn.

The Colours are decorated with the Belgian Croix de Guerre 1914-1918, Fourrageres in the colours of the Belgian Croix de Guerre 1940 and the Order of Leopold 3rd Class.
Motto: Riegersvliet
Garrison: Altenrath, Germany

4th Mounted Rifles Regiment
Raised in 1913 and disbanded in Feb. 1918. Reformed in 1919 and again disbanded 8 March 1923. With the mobilization of 1939 the Regiment was again reformed. Today it are reduced to one squadron.

Garrison: Altenrath, Germany.

Raised 21 January 1836.

I 15 Royal Älvsborg Regiment
Traces its origins back to the 16th Century, the oldest preserved records dates to 1549. At the begining of the 17th Century a large County Regiment of 3 000 men was created from the various companies raised in the provinces of Västergötland and Dalsland. On 10 March 1624 this Regiment was divided into three one becoming the Royal Älvsborg Regiment (the others became the Royal Halland Regt. and Royal Skaraborg Regt. [P 4]). During the years 1949-1963 the Regiment was armoured infantry. On 30 June 1998 the Royal Älvsborg Regiment was disbanded. Its traditions lived on in the staff unit the Älvsborg Group.

I 16 Royal Halland Regiment
Has common origins with the Royal Älvsborg Regt. Was first known as the Royal Västgöta-Dal Regiment and recieved its last name on 1 Jan. 1902 when the recruiting area was altered. During the years 1942-1952 the Regiment was Bicycle infantry. Disbanded on 30 June 2000 but its traditions was inherited by the Halland Group.

I 17 Royal Bohuslän Regiment
Formed on 21 Dec. 1720 by amalgamating one squadron of the Horse Life Regiment of the Queen Dowager of the Realm and the Bohuslän Dragoon Sqn. The new Regiment recieved the title Bohuslän Cavalry and Dragoon Regiment, which in 1727 became the Bohuslän Dragoon Regt. and in 1776 Bohuslän Light Dragoon Regt. In 1791 the Regiment had became an all infantry unit and received the last namne Royal Bohuslän Regiment. On 30 June 1992 it was disbanded, its traditions inherited by the Bohus-Dal Group.

I 18 Royal Västmanland Regiment
Traces its origins back to the 16th Century, the oldest preserved Records dates to 1559. Disbanded on 31 Dec. 1927. From 1943 until it was disbanded in 1983 the regimental Traditions was kept by the F 1 Royal Västmanland Wing of the Swedish Air Force. The Regiment was reformed on 1 July 1994 when the Västmanland Defence Area (Fo 48) was restructured as a Defence Area unit with a Depot. The new Regiment was disbanded on 29 Aug. 1994 and became the Västmanland Group.

I 19 Royal Norrbotten Regiment
Raised 1841 by partition of the Royal Västerbotten Field-Jaeger Regiment as the Norrbotten Field-Jaeger Corps. By Royal decree of 12 Dec 1892 the Corps became a Regiment as the Royal Norrbotten Regt. On 5 Oct. 1910 the Regiment gained a 4th Battalion which in 1917 became a Skier Bn. On 7 Feb. 1943 this Battalion was transfered to Kiruna, in 1945 this Battalion was separated from the Regiment at formed into the Army Jager School. On 1 July 1975 the Regiment and the Royal Norrbotten Armoured Bn. (P5) was amalgamated to the Royal Norrbotten Regt. with the Norrbotten Armoured Bn. (I 19/P 5). On 1 June 1994 the Regiment was transformed into a Cadre organized mechamnized Brigade with the name Norrbotten Regt. and Norrbotten Brigade. On 1 July 2000 the Brigade was again transformed this time into a Traning Regiment with the title Royal Norrbotten Regt. In this Regiment the former Royal Norrland Artillery Regt (A 8), Royal Norrland Air Defence Artillery Corps (Lv 7), Royal Norrland Engineer Corps (Ing 3) and Royal Norrland Signals Corps (S3) each forms a Battalion.

Regimental Motto: De hava aldrig svikit eller för egen del tappat = The Swedish motto freely translates as They have not failed or on thier own account been defeated. This Motto shared with the royal Västerbotten Regiment are the words of King Gustaf III before the War of 1788.

Allied "Regiment": the 6th Division of the Norwegian Army.

The Regiment received its latest Colours on its 350 anniversary 31 Aug 1974 from the hands of H.M. King Gustaf VI Adolf. The Standar of the Royal Norrbotten Armoured Bn. are carried by the Mechanized Battalion of I 19. The Regiment as tradition keeper of the Lappland Brigade also carries this Brigade's Colours since 1 July 1998.

I 20 Kungl. Västerbottens regemente (Royal Västerbotten Regiment)
Traces its origins back to th 16th Century, the oldest preserved records dates to 1552. In 1615 one large Regiment of 3 000 men was formed which was divided into two in 1624 one becoming the Västerbotten Regt. and the other the Hälsinge Regiment. A Royal letter dated 12 Dec. 1829 changed the name of the Regiment to Kungl. Västerbottens fältjägarregemente (Royal Västerbotten Field-Jaeger Regt.). In 1841 the Regiment was divided into Nr 19 Kungl. Norrbottens fältjägarkår (Royal Norrbotten Field-Jaeger Corps) and the Nr XIX Kungl. Västerbottens Fältjägarkår (Royal Västerbotten Field-Jaeger Corps). The first became I 19 and the later was expanded in 1892 to Kungl. Västerbottens regemente. Disbanded on 1 July 2000.

I 21 Kungl. Kalmar regemente (Royal Kalmar Regiment)
Traces its origins to at least 1553. Amalgamated with the Royal Jönköping Regt. 1 Jan. 1928, and raised again 1 July 1994 when the Kalmar Defence Area (Fo 18) was transformed into a Defence Area Regiment with a Depot. This new Regiment was disbanded 15 Dec. 1997. Its traditions lived on in the Kalmar Group.

I 22 Kungl. Lapplands Jägarregemente (Royal Lappland Jaeger Regt.)
Traces its origins back to the IV. (Ski) Bn. of I 19, which in 1943 was transfered to Kiruna and became indepandent. On 1 July 1945 the Bn. formed the nucleus of the Arméns Jägarskola (Army Jaeger School). On 1 July 1975 the School was united with the Kiruna Defence Area and became a Regiment as Kungl. Lapplands Jägarregemente. Disbanded on 30 June 2000 and its traditions was transfered to the Lappland Group.

I 29, I 28, I 21 Kungl. Västernorrlands regmente (Royal Western Norrland Regt.)
Traces its origins back to the 16th Century. On 16 Jan. 1646 the various units of the provinces of Medelpad and Ångermanland formed the Ångermanlands, Medelpads och Jämtlands regemente (Å., M. and J. Regt.). In 1660 this regiment was divided in to two and the men from Ångemanland and Medelpad was trasfered to the Navy. During the 19th Century a gradual return of these men to the Army comenced and on 19 Oct. 1854 the Kungl. Västernorrlands beväringsbataljon (Royal Western Norrland Conscript Bn.) was raised. On 1 Jan. 1887 became the Kungl. Västernorrlands bataljon and on 1 Jan. 1893 the battalion was expanded to a Regiment and recieved its last name. Disbanded on 30 June 2000, its traditions was inherited by the staff group the Ångermanland Group. The Regiment had number 29, but received 28 in 1902 when the Halland Bn. was disbanded and 21 in 1928 when the Kalmar regiment was amalgamated with the Jönköping Regt.
