The official AHF Inter-War quiz thread
A hint:
He had been in favour of a treaty with an age-old enemy of his country and this is the reason why he was killed although the killing was done without the authority of official representatives of the movement opposed to the treaty.

Still no takers! Has everybody been on Easter vacation?
One more hint. This a chapter from a book and I have censored some points which would have made it a bit too obvious:
Mr X, vice-president of the Executive Council, the cabinet formed by xxxxx, was murdered on his way to Mass on July xth. Mr X was the most able man in xxxxx parliamentary politics at the time. Apart from the reconstruction work which the xxxxx undertook after the Civil War, he had sustained the govermment throughout the war itself, and through many crises afterwards. He was a principal architect of the Statute of xxxxx which came into being two years after his death and which xxxxx was able to use to get rid of the oath. As often happens when a man of that calibre is killed, the shooting was not the result of a deep-laid plot, but the impetuous act of two young xxxxx men acting unofficially and without authority from the movement. One of them had been chosen to play in a football match in the south-east of the country, and they escaped the police dragnet by driving to the game as though nothing had happened. They were never brought to justice although one of them was killed in a cross-fire years afterwards when the xxxxx unsuccessfully tried to execute one of its opponents.

We, of course should have remembered your interest towards Irish history.

Hu Tapani
Correct for the most part. The company was actually called "Canadian" Vickers but that's small potatoes.
