Actually Guys, the rumor of Napoleon being a Muslim dates back to his invasion of Egypt. I believe it was a ploy by the French to represent him to the local population as being more true to Islam than the former rulers of Egypt. Now, of course Napoleon wasn't actually a Muslim, but the rumor had a life of its own.

Best,
David (Proving once again that even the unusal doesn't always merit skepticism.)

Sorry. I looked all around and didn't see any subject lines about it. I really did think I was missing something.

Thanks

I have heard that Kaiser Friedrich II. von Hohenstaufen was a muslim.
Certainly not. He was a Roman Catholic, but was uncommonly tolerant of Islamic faith for his time (13th century). He was raised in Norman Sicily, an environment we today would call multicultural, where everyday interaction between Christians and Moslems was, if not common, at least not uncommon.

In fact, Friedrich II seems to have believed that all faiths (or at least Christianity and Islam) worship the same god in different ways, an idea way ahead of his times. It's even possible that he was an agnostic.

Was Napoleon a Muslim?
Yes
Well, at least nominally. During his Egyptian campaign, as a way to get the Egyptian people's support, he officially converted to Islamic religion and underwent whatever ceremony is used for that by muslims. Obviously his conversion had nothing to do with religion, but with politics.
On the other hand, Napoleon is known to have truly admired the Mohammed and even learned off by heart some suras of the Koran.

Really? AFAIK [#1] the ceremony above includes a little surgical operation. Unpleasant as it is today, it must have been positively scaring in 1798.

[#1] having not experienced it first-hand, I may be mistaken.
