At 17.25hrs automobile buzzing on Siira road

At 21.45 hrs automobile buzzing on S of Seesjärvi.

Patrolling
At 22.00-23.30hrs our recon patrol 0+1+9 took a boat and checked the little islands in E Varpajärvi which were found to be unmanned.
At 03.00hrs Lt. Heikkilä's long range patrol returned to “4”.
Also the recon patrol (1+3) that had set out on the 18.8.at 21.00 hrs returned to “4”
At 20.00 recon patrol 1+1+4 set out from “Tukki”. Did not return yet.

Our light mortar fired 28 rds at enemy worksites at Ahvenjärvi.

Propaganda
At “Puro” 04.20-04.35hrs enemy propaganda transmission. Demands to surrender and news from the Eastern front. Good audio.
At 05.00hrs Yelling, bearing 23-00, distance 300m.

According to the artillery int.officer the artillery grouping has changed as listed here:
The F.O.O.teams of III/KTR11 on Varpajärvi sector (I Btn and II Btn sections) shall move on 22.8.to the JR45 sector. Kev.Psto 18 has manned the arty observation posts on the section of I Btn. The observation posts on the II Btn section shall be manned by II/KTR11 and the light mortar platoon of the secton by 23.8.
Ras.Psto21 moved fron S of Uuksunjärvi on 20.8. to the terrain between Valkiajärvi – Siira road.
This Artillery Battalion shall take care of the counter-battery acrtion at the sectors Syskyjärvi and Varpajärvi.
III/KTR11 shall be the supporting arty Btn of Syskyjärvi sector. At the moment the Varpajärvi support group comprises II/KTR11 and Kev.Psto18.
18.Krh.K shall stay at the Varpajärvi section.

Patrolling
Enemy ten man recce patrol detected at 03.25 hrs in front of “3”. They went in our minefield. ¤ mines exploded – moaning heard.
Our prisoner catching patrol 1+1-4 out from “3” managed to wound one prisoner who died during transport. Documents were secured.

Our light mortar fired 5 HE rds at an enemy nest in Ahvenjärvi section .
Our counterbattery fire 24 shells.

09.00hrs Last night our patrol caught the documents of a killed enemy which proved that his unit was 340.TKKP and his name was Popov, Alexander, Pvt., his task: paramedic. The prisoner was taken about 600m N. of Latvajärvi.

10.00hrs Propaganda company men Capt. Turunen and military official Vuorela interviewed Lt. Heikkilä. The same propaganda men also visited the Battalions, collecting material for the press and photographing.

12.00hrs Sgt. Lindelöff of the Recon section was ordered to set up a distracting smokescreen in the rear of 9.Coy which took place at 15.00hrs.

12.30-16.30hrs Commander and Rgt.Officer inspected the K-line at I Btn section.
15.00hrs 14.Coy command post moved from its present location (Rgt. Command post) to the terrain N of Luotojärvi.

17.30hrs Situation report to 8.D HQ:

As to the propaganda men one could google for the names but this username has enough projects going on. Vuorela might have been the poet Einari Vuorela ? Also the armistice was so close that maybe the text and pics they produced did not pass through the censoring and publishing process in time .

Our patrol 1+4 in front of “Puro “ involved in firefighting and withdrew (20.00-22.00hrs)
At 03.00hrs our recce patrol 1+0+3 out from “5”. Reconnoitring the terrains E and S of Latvajärvi. Not yet back.
Our patrol checked the corduroy road blown up last night, of which a 100m stretch had been blown up.

13.00-17.00hrs Gen. Kääriäinen inspected with our Commander the logistics of the Rgt, of II Btn and 7.Coy. He paid special attention to the sugar and tobacco stores which proved to be in order.

20.45hrs The tel.message at 13.30hrs by Este4 has been forwarded to the Battalions.
Olsson /Siurua I Btn, Marttinen II Btn, Tanskanen III Btn.

The dugout that the Rgt.HQ received today for their use is quite a handsome structure comprising seven stylish, well ventilated, well lit and damp rooms. The dugout is also housing some extra officers waiting for the completion of their dugouts.
Final comment: the HQ dugout is a piece of brilliant architecture in the glum wilderness.

Enemy is grouping with the force of one Coy. Very intense fire contact. Enemy is trying to spread specially to S. Action going on also on the far side of the river, we have heard command words and bantering. I Brtn reserve has been transferred to the action terrain to be available.

At 01.30hrs 5 enemies tried to plant mines in front of Saapas. Our light mortar fired 20 rds at them.
Timber working in front of every stronghold at Ahvenjärvi section.

Patrolling
Lt. Heikkilä's patrol returned to “5” at 04.45hrs having completed the installation of a wiretapping cable.
At 21-02.00 hrs Our recce patrol in the no-man's land in front of “Etu”.
Found that the enemy is in the old positions.

At 23.00hrs An enemy detachment of about one Coy tried to approach our battle forepost “Varsi”.
Having received fire the enemy tried to outflank but without result.
Our artillery fired 22 shells, our heavy mortar 7rds and our light mortar 75 rds.
Action ended at 01.00 as the Russki withdrew.
Enemy artillery fired 10pcs 5” shells and 25pcs 3” shells.
No casualties for us.

14.15hrs Report froom II Btn Marttinen/Olsson:
At 13.50hrs at stronghold “Tie” two Privates slightly wounded by shell splinters.
( In the margin:Annexed to the diary a report of the prisoner taking attempt last night. Appx. No 43.)
At the same time one Private KIA in “Suo” by a shell splinter.

05.30hrs Situation report to 8.D HQ:

Patrolling:
At “Tukki”: Patrol Syrjänen 1+1+2 out. Did not return.
At “Saapas” 20 Russkies in front of “Saapas” at 21.30hrs. Driven away by mortar fire.

Traffic:
At “Rie”: automobilebuzzing on the Siira road.
Propaganda:
Propaganda transmission in front of “Tie”. Subject as before.

07.30hrs Report to 8.D: HQ:
At 05.00 hrs the enemy started an recce attempt supported by strong arty and mortar fire on a wide front. Intense barrages started at the S part of Karutjärvi section. In front of “Saapas” the enemy employed a smokescreen where also an enemy detachment one Coy in strenght attacked at our positions. In front of “Suo” a platoon attacked. The attacks were repelled by artillery, mortar and inf. weapons.
AT 05-05.40hrs movement was detected in front of “Tie”, “1”, “2”, “3”, ”4”, and “Etu”.
At 05.00hrs an enemy detachment, about one platoon, tried to approach “5”. It was driven away by inf.fire. The same detachment tried again to approach “4” with similar results.
The enemy barrage went on for about 20min and it was participated by aboutr 10 batteries + mortars and the shelling was most intense at Ahvenjärvi section and battle foreposts “1”, “2”, “3”, “4”, “5”, “6”.
The enemy was found to have used smoke hand grenades in front of “Saapas”.
Our casualties were minimal.

09.30hrs Maj. Holopainen arrived at the Rgt HQ and took over the duties of the Rgt CO as Col. Simelius left for a furlough. Capt. Laakso took over the command of I Btn as a deputy.
11.45hrs Col. Simelius left for a furlough.
12.00hrs Report to 8.D. HQ:
During the enemy forced recce attack the enemy suffered about 30 men casualties: In fornt of “Saapas” 15 by arty, in front of “Suo” 10 by inf.fire, in front of “Tie” 5 by inf. Fire.
Our casualties:
2 privates wounded at “Tie” by shell splinters, 4 horses were KIA and 3 WIA at II Btn.

12.10hes A map transparent drawing on the grouping at Karutjärvi section was sento to I/15.Pr. Who in turn shall send us their own grouping drawing.
12.20hrs Report from 8.D.HQ:
A new battle forepost has been set up on 25.8. on the section of IIIBtn, its name is 5A (5380, 9290). The names of the other battle foreposts are not affected.
