Post by Allan_Kieffer » 26 Sep 2011, 11:22

Hello,

I am looking for a good source of WW2 pictures in color of Finnish leaders.
By Finnish leaders i'm speaking of ministers, navy, airforce and army leaders.

Thank you for your help.

Regards.

Colour photographs taken during the wartime are a rare game to find and therefore it is also difficult to find photographs of Finnish leaders in colour. The only one I have seen from Mannerheim is the famous photo taken for Signal magazine in June 1942. The same thing applies to Risto Ryti, not to speak about the generals of different arms.

I understand, i'm looking for pictures for a personal work, i don't want to buy them, i just wanted to know if there is a reference website or book showing a large or comprehensive collection of Finnish leaders color pictures.

There were very few colour photographs taken during the War as all colour film had to bought and processed in Germany. As I wrote before, due of these facts, I guess the photographs mentioned in my previous post are the only colour photographs in existance of Finnish political or military leaders during wartime. The Mannerheim photograph can be easily find through Google if needed.

If the newspaper quiz is correct, he is wearing:

around neck:
Mannerheim Cross 1st Class
Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross

near diagonal strap of belt
Clasp to the Iron Cross 2nd Class

on breast:
Iron Cross 1st Class with Clasp
Mannerheim Cross 2nd Class

medal ribbon:
Medal of Liberty 1st Class on Rosette Ribbon
Cross of Liberty 4th Class
Commemorative Medal of Civil War
Commemorative Medal of 1939-40 War with Swords
Commemorative Medal of Conquer of Tampere in Gold

On his arm he is wearing the badge of Civil Guard General Staff.
