Coming from a non-Finnish speaker who (and others) could use properly translated archival files...

Can any Finnish speakers translate the JR 14 War Diares? Specifically from December 4th - December 30th (Pages 97-153) because that is the highlight of the Merkki battles in December.

Starting at Page 97 - http://digi.narc.fi/digi/view.ka?kuid=1588306

Thanks!

JR 14 war diary, extract

03.12.1939: Calm day, field fortification work continued.

15.10hrs Battle patrol Vuomaa's (recon, liaison and fighting task in the terrain of Perkjärvi rwy station village, led by Res. 2nd Lt. Vuomaa, comprising one rifle and one LMG squad) report received including among other things:
- After our troops E of lake Suulajärvi had withdrawn in the evening of 2.12. to the Pamppala line, the elements of Kev.Os5 in the terrain of Lounatjoki have moved to the line S tip of lake Muolajärvi – N tip of lake Suulajärvi .
-One squadron shall man the line N tip of lake Suulajärvi – Savikko mill (excl).
- The command post situated at the crossroads Perkjärvi – Muolaa (Kyyrölä) – Maisniemi
- Bicycle coy has manned the line Savikko mill (incl) - S tip of lake Muolajärvi . (There are also three machine guns on this sector.)
- Kev.Os5 command post shall be situated at the Keskikylä terrain.
- At Maisniemi there is just one MG squad.
- Group U has not been engaging the enemy on 2.12. and they still are at the Uusikirkko terrain.

As the situation was developing this way and since the evacuation of the large Taaperniemi village (+300 houses) was still going on with all available force in a great haste the Regimental CO requested permission of 5.D CO to torch the village in advance as soon as each house had been gutted because else they may become accommodation for the enemy. It was promised that a response would be provided after some time.

14.20hrs Res.2nd Lt Kallio returned from liaising with Kev.Os.5.
He told among other matters:
-At 09.45hrs Coy Kouri (I/JR13) was engaging enemy comprising about 3 Coys. No tanks encountered. They tried to outflank on the right from the terrain at the N tip of Suulajärvi lake.
-Capt. Koivistoinen came to help with two platoons, carrying out a successful counterstrike
-Kev.Os.5 is still in the defensive positions.

19.40hrs Res.2nd Lt. Silkkilä returned from Det. Vaala's command post.

He told about the situation in the front about as Res. 2nd Lt. Kallio did. In addition he mentioned that the situation as he left was turning rather critical because the U Group had received orders to keep the line Kaukjärvi – Perkjärvi village. Now that Det. Vaala was under heavy pressure and almost in a straight angle to the U group there was a risk that the enemy could get in the rear of the U group and in their retreat route, in case Det. Vaula is unable to stand their ground. Moreover, the enemy was applying hard pressure from the direction of the railway specially at the Perkjärvi rwy village.
He was ordered to report in the morning 6.12. to the Beach sector CO (I Btn) for detailed instructions.

Cavalry Capt. Alfthan was ordered to command .
22.15hrs Rgt CO phoned the 5.D chief of staff and suggested that we should not yield but with a brisk counterstrike we would beat the enemy and retake the Keskikylä village.
22.40hrs 5.DE informed that units of Det. Vaala and U group are withdrawing past the SW side of lake Perkjärvi.
22.45hrs The above mentioned was relayed to the I Btn CO for his information; also the order that the troops sent by the Rgt (battle fore-posts of Northern beach sector) shall be subordinated to the Kev.Os.5 CO.

JR 14 war diary, extract.

06.12.1939: (First part)
00.10hrs The officer patrol sent out by II Btn returned, reporting that Det. Vaala has started retreating about one hour ago.
00.30hrs Col. Lt Vaala arrived on his way to the rear.
He told among other:
Enemy pressure had been heavy all day, specially at the terrain N of lake Suulajärvi, where the enemy did manage to break through up to the Perkjärvi village – Maisniemi road where Capt. Koivistoinen beat them back with his brisk counter-strikes
The situation had turned critical because as the U group stood their ground as they had ordered to, their position could have become untenable due to the risk of being cut off from their retreating route.
The enemy troops encountered were well trained and equipped with a great quantity of auto weapons; less tanks than could have been expected.
00.45hrs Col. Lt Tiainen, HRR CO, arrived at the command post.
01.00hrs In the direction of the road to Perkjärvi rwy station village loud shouts of “help” and clanking of carts were heard. Soon the entire road as long as could be seen was full of withdrawing columns of men and vehicles in total panic. Shouts could be heard; “Tanks are coming and soon here” .
This was caused by the fact that the troops delaying at Perkjärvi had to disengage hurriedly in the darkness of the night and start withdrawal along the narrowish roads that merged at Kosenjoki.
The panic was triggered most likely by our armoured car, securing the rear of the withdrawal, that was not recognized in the darkness.
Since the situation in the darkness was not fully known the entire Regiment was alerted and the AT outfits were sent to their positions.
In addition, strong officer patrols were posted to guide the traffic in the most important road crossings to control and pacify the withdrawing men.
Order was restored to some extent and withdrawal continued more calmly.
01.10hrs I Btn reported: At the S edge of Suurisuo bog Russian talk and commands had been heard. Bunker SU2 had sent out a patrol that encountered at a distance of 4km in no-man's-land in front of the main defence line an enemy patrol comprising 30 to 40 men, which they engaged; both parties withdrew from the scene and the contact was lost.
01.30hrs Telephoned order from 5.DE (Res.2nd Lt. Penttinen):
“Efficient reconnoitring on our sector on the line Uuskelola- Suur-Mikkelinjärvi- Perkjärvi rwy station- Perkjärvi village and the road to NE is to be carried out to find out if the enemy at Perkjärvi has withdrawn and if so, to which direction. Constant recon to find this out must be set up. First results of recon to be forwarded to 5.DE on 6.12. by 10.00hrs.
By order, head of staff/Chief of II Bureau staff”.
02.15hrs Telephoned report from 5.DE:
“Kev.Os5 is to move to the location where they were in the beginning of October . (Kattilaoja terrain). Connect to Message Exchange no.6.”
02.30hrs The abovementioned was forwarded to Kev.Os5 CO.
02.45hrs I Btn CO was informed:
The abovementioned and order that the reinforced Coy (8.K) sent to assist Kev.Os.5 shall take over the task of Kev.Os.5.
Secure your right flank with extra care
In case of overwhelming enemy pressure withdraw through forepost positions.
Supply carried out with the Anti-Gas lorry.
03.46hrs Kev.Os,5 CO reported:
“Kev.Os.5 forced to retreat because outflanked on the right by two enemy companies. I shall withdraw delaying, via front post positions. No tanks encountered¨.
04.00hrs The abovementioned was forwarded to 5.DE
04.05hrs The battle forepost at Kosenjoki (6th Coy) was engaged by the enemy.
04.30hrs The situation is this:
-The battle foreposts at Kosenjoki are engaging the enemy.
-In the no-man's-land from Kosenjoki to Metsäkylä the possible existence of the enemy has not been verified (threat of outflanking from the right wing against Kev.Os.5, now 8th Coy). Consequently the Rgt Coy amended his orders issued at 02.45hrs to the I Btn CO as follows:
-Reinforced 8th Coy shall pull back and move to the battle foreposts at Metsäkylä.
04.40hrs on: The battle foreposts at Metsäkylä are heavily engaging the enemy.
07.50hrs I Btn CO reported:
“Lt. Haavisto (CO of the battle foreposts at Metsäkylä) that his left wing was forced to retreat to the second delay line. Heavy firing on the right wing. Asking permission to withdraw to the second delay line”.
Rgt CO did not agree; the situation must be analysed better.
08.25hrs Rgt CO phoned 5.DE and explained the situation (it could not be done earlier because the telephone line was cut off)
-At Kosenjoki nothing new. Some firing.
-Likewise at Metsäkylä. Battle forepost CO requests reinforcement to be able to keep his positions.
-The left flank of the battle foreposts is under heavy pressure, slowly retreating, tanks are likely to try to advance on the small roads and paths.
In addition he requested on top of his many previous requests AT guns for his use.
08.45hrs Order to IIIBtn CO:
-Satchel charges to be made available and set in readiness; air surveillance to be intensified.
08.55hrs Order to IIBtn CO:
-It must be informed to every man that even though some tanks may break through that is no cause for alarm. One must stay in one's position in any case.
09.00hrs Res.2nd Lt Jalonen of the Sissi detachment arrived and informed :
During action he had moved to Lounatjoki; some Sissis torched Lounatjoki (village) others the Rwy station house at Perkjärvi. The Perkjärvi orphanage had been torched by Civil Guardsmen.
The action was not totally successful as the Russkies detected the Sissi hideouts.
Res. Staff Sgt. Nieminen with his 10 men was left behind to carry out his task.
09.20hrs IIIBtn CO reported:
-Reinforced 8th Coy is back. Some men are setting up satchel charges, others digging AT and AA foxholes, the rest are having rest.
Rgt CO: Keep on the standby every moment.
09.25hrs II Btn CO informed that the 8th Coy CO had reported on the enemy use of weapons:
The enemy is firing small, most likely rifle grenades which have a small effect but when exploding they make inexperienced me think that SMGs are fired nearby. -The men got much nervous initaially by them.
Mortar bombs have a high charge but small splinters
AT and infantry cannon shell whine is eery but effect small
09.50hrs IIBtn CO reported:
-Officer patrol reconnoitring E of the rwy line returned, reporting that they had advanced up to the NE side of the Perkjärvi school of household ; no enemies encountered. The orphanage is in flames.
-Reconnoitring with new patrols to the same direction.
10.00hrs 5.DE III Bureau CO Capt. Kurenmaa informed:
“-Two AT guns are coming today for you.
-JP3 shall arrive today at the terrain N of Saaretjoki and camp there”.

06.12.1939:
10.10hrs The above-mentioned was forwarded to I Btn CO and this order, too:
-Find out about the enemy at the shore of Muolajärvi lake with forced reconnoitring (the F.O.O. In the Suurisaari island of Muolajärvi lake has reported that there are enemies advancing along the shoreline for our main defence positions_)
At the same time the I Btn CO informed about the situation at the battle fore-posts:

11.10hrs I Btn CO reported:
-Parts of battle fore-posts are still engaging the enemy on the second delay line; tank buzz is probably imagined.
12.00hrs By this time on the 1st Coy sector the battle fore-posts had withdrawn behind the main defence line; on 5th Coy sector not until 1500hrs
12.05hrs I Btn (?) reported:
“3rd Coy CO (Cavalry Lt. Linnoila) reporting: tank buzzing heard from Taaperniemi”.
12.08hrs The above-mentioned was forwarded to 5.D chief of staff, also: AT guns, and quickly.

JR 14 war diary, extract 3rd part

06.12.1939:

14.00hrs on- First enemy outfits in intense engagement with our main resistance position at the shore of Muolajärvi lake.
14.00hrs II AK CO, Gen. Lt. Öhquist and 5.D.CO Col. Isakson arrived at the dugout.
The AK CO again explained the order and its purpose; the order according to which 1.Pr is subordinated to 5.D. CO to be used for a counter-attack through the sector in SW direction, with the limited objective of destroying the enemy approaching the main resistance position and thus prevent the Russians to make too easy a contact with the main defence line.
(Double vertical pencil lines in the margin of this passage.)
15.00hrs II AK CO and 5.D.CO left the dugout.
15.30hrs Enemy attacked supported by tanks against the sentry fore-post at Kosenjoki. Tanks were not able to cross Kosenjoki river; one tank drove in the river at the blown up bridge and sunk. The attack was repelled.
Heavy pressure went on after this all the night 6./7.12.39.
16.00hrs Enemy attacked supported by tanks against the Beach sector while shooting fairly intensely with mortars.
Heavy pressure went on after this all the night 6./7.12.39.
The attacker most likely had some special troops – maybe parts of an recon battalion – because their action and countenance referred to good training.
Complete darkness and lack of illumination devices combined with initial nervousness gave rise to all kinds of terrible rumours and hair-raising reports, but else the men stayed excellently put. The entire front line was “playing” like a sewing machine all night although it was only the beach sector that was under attack.
16.35hrs Situation report to 5.DE (Rgt.CO):
“Tanks and enemies at hard work. Fore-post position (at Kosenjoki) and stronghold Saari (extended) still in my hands. Intense noise and movement, but it could also be a forced reconnoitring”
16.35hrs Order to IIIBtn CO:
“The front line must be reinforced with the companies of the Reserve Btn: one Coy both to the Beach sector and Tassio sector.”
IIIBtn CO suggested basing on this:
8th Coy + MG platoon to the Beach sector and
7th Coy (excl. Platoon Lonttinen who was manning the Saari extended stronghold) to the Tassio sector;
approved by the Rgt Co.
In the afternoon the entire 1.Pr. Arrived at the sector of the Rgt.
16.40hrs Rgt CO made a telephone contact with III/JR13 CO who reported that he was going to launch an attack with limited objectives, from his sector eastward, in front of the Kosenjoki fore-posts.
17.00hrs 2./Rask.Psto1 CO Lt. Weck reported to the Rgt.CO.
Order: liaise without delay the II/KTR5 CO to establish co-operation.
18.25hrs Rgt CO informed I Btn CO:
“Sotarauta (Res.Lt, CO of C sector) claims that the enemy is trying to break the stone hindrance on the left and the wire on his sector. If that indeed is so, take that into account when distributing extra weapons and forces.”
During the night the enemy pressure kept getting ever stronger and appeared to be directed specially at the strongholds C3 and C2.
20.00hrs Enemy attacked against the Saari fore-post stronghold; the attack was repulsed.
20.45hrs I Btn CO reported:
“C sector left wing subjected to hard pressure; I have sent two platoons of my reserve (2nd Coy) to help. -Enemy is firing on the left wing of my sector at the stone hindrance and on the right wing the wire, trying to break them.”

7.12.1939

00.50hrs III Btn CO reported:
“Res. Staff Sgt. (of Rgt Sissi detachment) phoned from the sector of III/JR13 and reported that he when retreating found a lot of tanks heading East, on the Boboschino - Perkjärvi road at the broken bridge of Lohkoja. Tanks were standing on the road and the bridge was being repaired. He thinks the repair will take until morning.”
01.00hrs The above mentioned was relayed for the information of 5.D HQ (office II). At the same time requested an artillery fire strike at the mentioned point of terrain.
At midnight the enemy pressure relieved a little but at dawn it increased again. Specially hard the pressure was in the direction of the Muolaa lake shoreline, where the enemy was attacking skilfully and made use of the terrain (specially dead angles) excellently.
04.00hrs Enemy again attacked the Saari forward stronghold and managed to partly break in the stronghold.
08.30hrs Counter-attack at stronghold Saari and the enemy was repelled.
At the same time the enemy managed to partly break in the main resistance line at Väisänen but was beaten back.
-Heavy pressure also at SU 7 and SU 6 .
At dawn the attack was supported by 10 tanks, of which 3 were definitely destroyed, possibly 5.
08.30hrs At daybreak the enemy pressure increased at Kosenjoki where the battle fore-posts were no more able to stand their ground but started withdrawing to the main defence line. The men were quite tired, having been in their positions several days and nights in one stretch. (Due to lack of time this line was fortified just partly; only firing foxholes and AT and AA foxholes next to them, so the men had no place for resting.). Battle fore-posts were returned to the forward sentry positions where they managed to get into.
09.00hrs One POW was taken on the beach sector at SU 7; from there on to 5.D HQ at 11.15hrs.
10.30hrs Air alarm: Bombers, bombarding the sector and Kämärä station area.
12-30hrs The pressure at C sector that had relieved at midnight again increased; also smoke employed in front of strongholds C 3 and C 2.
Enemy infantry is still very battle-worthy.
12.55hrs I Btn CO reported:
“Plenty of enemies on Suursuo; arriving at our hindrance line under the cover of smoke. On our left at the moment all quiet, no smoke.”
13.26hrs 5.D HQ informed (res. Lt. Vartia):
“IIAC HQ informs that there is a reason to expect a strong enemy attack SW if Muolajärvi lake. Inform also 1.Pr.
By order: Chief of staff.”
13.45hrs Telephone message from 5.D HQ (res. Lt. Vartia):
“Our a/c are going to raid at 1400hrs either at Perkjärvi village or Taaperniemi or both.
By order: 5.D HQ Chief of staff.”
14.00hrs In the dugout arrived Cpl. Hellman who had got lost from his unit (7./JR31)
He told among other matters:
-I was with the attack on the isthmus between lakes Muolajärvi and Yskjärvi that was started the day before yesterday;
-I was surrounded at Keskikylä and having erred around along the SW beach line of Muolajärvi I arrived at the firing positions of an artillery battery (5.KTR5) at 07.00hrs
-The ice on Muolajärvi lake supported a man near the shore but not in the middle.
14.30hrs Order on forced reconnoitring on the night 7./8.12.1939
From the shore sector, at a couple of points with limited objective;'
From Tasionlohko sector via the Saari forward stronghold along the W edge to the S edge of Suurisuo
The advance is to take place with loud noise; plenty of hand grenades are to be taken along, yell and command large outfits”
Without fire support.
The reconnoitring outfits are to set out by sector and by stronghold at 2100, 24.00 and 03.00hrs for the reason that our own men would not be fired at when they are returning.
Depending on the terrain either up to the wire or beyond it during the false attack.
16.05hrs 5.D CO called and enquired about the situation. Since Col. Polttila found himself in the terrain Col. Vihma answered. 5.D CO did not get the information he wanted because the phone call was cut off.
16.30hrs 5.D CO called again, Col. Vihma described the situation.
5.D CO issued an order:
-Due to bad communications I shall not decide on the eventual action by 1.Pr, instead the 1.Pr CO in co-operation with JR 14 CO is to be ready to beat back any enemy break-ins.
-Mobility must be improved.
16.50hrs III/JR13 CO called and reported:
His battle fore-posts are withdrawing.
16.55hrs II Btn CO reported the same.
17.00hrs Order to III Btn CO:
-The Btn is to assign a Company to take back the lost Kosenjoki fore-post on the night of 7./8.12.
-II Btn shall send a MG half platoon as reinforcement.
-The Coy CO is to report to the Tassionlohko sector CO.
(7th Coy was assigned to this task, their battle report on their action in the Kosenjoki fore-posts in the appendix, no.42)
18.00hrs 5.D HQ III Bureau CO, Capt. Kurenmaa informed:
“Kev.Os.5 shall be subordinated to JR14 CO.
5D CO.”
18.30hrs The above order came in writing (Appx. no.43)
19.00hrs Capt. Reunanen of 5.D HQ reported to the Rgt CO as the liaison officer in the Rgt.
He brought with him an order on reconnoitring, in writing (Appx. no.44)
19.50hrs Tassionlohko sector CO reported that the Kosenjoki battle fore-posts have withdrawn, not so due to enemy pressure but the fatigue of men.
Rgt CO ordered that the manning of the battle fore-posts by III Btn as ordered before, must be sent at once to retake the lost fore-post position.
Since due to this order the Regimental reserve (III Btn)had been depleted, 1. PR CO subordinated one of his Companies (Coy Jore) to JR14 CO for the night of 7./8.12.1939
22.43hrs 5.D HQ informed (res. Lt. Vartia):
“IIAC HQ informs that the subordination of 1.Pr to 5.D ends and the unit moves back to 1.D. Taking off at 8.12.39 at 0500hrs. Marching objective the terrain at the W tip of lake Muolajärvi, between the river flowing from NW and Hotakka village. 1.D shall move to the area 1466 – 1451.

JR 14 9.12.1939

08.15hrs Rgt CO contacted by phone III/JR13 CO; nothing special but Perojoki river ice is already supporting a man's weight.
08.20hrs Due to the abovementioned an order was issued to the Reserve Btn CO:
“One rifle platoon behind the right seam without delay.”
10.15hrs 1.Pr. CO phoned and told that he found himself behind the Rgt. (Tel. Heinjoki – Heikurila 1,2,3.)
10.55hrs Documents taken from a destroyed enemy tank were brought to the Command Dugout: a map case, a large map, a book and other documents
11.00hrs The abovementioned “booty” was forwarded to 5.D HQ by a messenger officer.
11.30hrs Regimental order K.D. N:o232/I/2.sal. (Appx. no.46).
12.10hrs Rgt CO phoned the 5.D chief of staff, reporting:
“According to the information provided by the Jussinlohko sector CO the Muolajärvi lake ice supports a single man, which means that there is a gap in the front line.”
He suggested that the defence of Muolajärvi lake should be assigned to a detached outfit, because he considered that he was unable to be responsible of it with his own troops.
The Chief of staff in this occasion informed that the Regiment is getting replacements as follows:
-80 riflemen
-10 trained SMG gunners
-7 LMG NCO s
The replacment is to be picked up at Kämärä at 18.35hrs (the commandant to be liaised)
14.40hrs II AC HQ (4642) reports (via 5.D HQ)
“12.TieRak K. subordination to 5.D ends and the Coy shall be transferred to 11.D next night, to Mutaranta. There the accommodtion is arranged in dugouts by 11.D. Sapper CO shall have for now one car and two lorries at his disposal. The rest shall join the Company.”
15.10hrs Jussinlohko sector CO reported:
“ My patrol has encountered in Metsäkylä an enemy patrol (5 to 6 men wearing fur coats) the men of which, our men claim, spoke Finnish. I am going to send a new patrol to find out about the enemy I am facing.”
15.20hrs An officer from Kev.Os.5 is ordered to liaise with JR31 on the Kyyrölä isthmus.( Loud noise of battle is emerging from the Muolajärvi – Yskjärvi isthmus and telephone contact could not be made.)
15.20hrs 5.D HQ reporting:
“III/JR31 has reconnoitred in the direcion of Perkjärvi station; enemies have been detected but the strength has not been found out yet. The enemy has bivouacked at the road NW from Perkjärvi station (estimated 4 Coys).
Bureau II CO.”
16.40hrs 5.D HQ reported (Capt. Selinheimo):
“V.Ker.P. N:o 3 shall be set up about 1,5km NE of Leipäsuo station. (Feeding point). Ready for action starting about 20.30hrs tonight.
By order/Bureau II CO.”
16.45hrs III/JR31 CO reported that he shall attack in the direction of Perkjärvi station village on 9.12. evening at about 21.00-23.00 via his battle fore-posts.
16.50hrs The abovementioned was forwarded to Musti sector CO.
19.00hrs The officer sent by Kev.Os.5 to JR 31 returned; nothing to report.
20.00hrs The abovementioned replacement arrived at the Rgt Command post.
22.40hrs Rgt CO posted Res. 2nd Lt. Heikkilä as the liaison officer in 1.D HQ at Heinjoki.
Else the day was calm. Shelling mostly at the front line, Leipäsuo staton village and Kattilaoja.
01.40hrs 5.D HQ reported:
“Perkjärvi station area free of enemy. III/JR13 has observed that on the road Perkjärvi – Orphanage – Kosenjoki there are moving about Companies, Platoons and tanks (3 pcs). (Most of them are bivouacked at the road next to pt.38). The road Perkjärvi station – Kosenjoki is empty.”

JR 14, 10.12.1939

03.00hrs Capt. Rinne of 1.Pr. reported as liaison officer.
03.05hrs Res.2nd Lt. Heikkilä returned from 1.D HQ, bringing an order of 1.D.
08.30hrs Enemy pressure against the Kosenjoki battle fore-post started, continuing all day; The enemy was unable to proceed but their several attempts were repelled.
13.05hrs C sector CO reported:
“200 Russkies at the S edge of Suurisuo bog are advancing E.”
13.20hrs Telephoned order from 5.D HQ (Capt. Kurenmaa):
“Kev.Os.5 and all AT guns received from 5.D must be returned immediately as the Regiment now has been subordinated to 1.D.
_5.D CO.
14.00hrs Regimental order K.D. N:o 234/I/2.sal. (Appx. no.47)
15.10hrs 1.Pr. CO arrived at the command dugout to discuss the arrival of 1.Pr. to the front line on the right side of JR14.
According to the received order the right wing of the Rgt is so changed that 1.Pr. shall relieve the elements of the regiment that are defending the line W of the new limit.
Since 1.Pr. shall arrive at their new sector late on the night of 10./11.12. after a strenuous march and since the terrain to be held is unknown and difficult, Col. Vihma informed that there is no way he is able to carry out the relief during this day.
Therefore Col. Vihma decided that the relief shall be carried out slowly and I/1.Pr shall be held in reserve and in standby to operate in the directions that are under potential threat. In these cases JR14 CO has the right to issue direct orders to I/Pr.1. CO.
15.25hrs Order to Jussi sector CO:
“See to it that the enemy is not allowed to break the stone hindrance in the cover of the beach embank.”
15.40hrs 1.D CO at Heinjoki contacted by telephone.
15.50hrs Order from Kev.Os.5 CO to be forwarded to the CO of Bicycle Coy/Kev.Os.5 still in defence in C sector: He is to stay there until he shall receive orders from JR14 CO.
15.55hrs Rgt CO issued an order to Jussi sector CO that he is not allowed to hand over his AT guns without permission. (The order was issued under the responsibility of the Rgt CO).
16.10hrs Order to III Btn CO:
“Bicycle Coy/Kev.Os.5 and MG platoon/Kev.Os.5 are to be relieved during this night.”
16.15hrs An order in writing was received on handing over to 5.D both Kev.Os.5 and the AT guns. (Appx. N:o 48).
The above-mentioned orders are due to the present situation:
-At about 1500hrs the enemy had launched tank supported attack both at the Kosenjoki forward strong-point and Jussi sector.
-Just at the moment as the 5.D orders arrived the fighting was at its fiercest and the pressure was specially hard in the direction of Muolajärvi lake beach (Smoke, too, was used).
-Consequently the order could not be fulfilled.
16.30hrs Enemy attacked the Saari forward strongpoint but the attack was repulsed.
During the day II/Pr.1. CO and some of the officers arrived to familiarize with their future sector.
18.15hrs Prop.Os. Men arrived at the Command Dugout to set up a “concert” for the enemy facing the sector of the Rgt. -They were sent to the Ranta sector because there the battle contact was the most intense.
21.00hrs III Btn CO reported that in his opinion “SMG gunners” were actually indirect MG fire or rifle grenades.
21-10hrs The above-mentioned was relayed to 5.D HQ for their information.
Enemy pressure decreased by night. The night was calm. Some reconnoitring.

JR 14, 11.12.1939

01.30hrs 7th Coy was relieved from their fore-post duty at Kosenjoki and returned to their Battalion.
07.10hrs Enemy artillery for the first time fired in a strike manner and mostly at the rear elements of the Rgt defensive positions.
07.30hrs Reserve CO reported:
“-8th Coy + 2 Ptns of 3.KKK led by Lt. Standertskjöld-Nordenstam have manned the “Hauta” sector.
-Relief has been completed and the responsibility for the front line transferred on 10.12. at 2300hrs.
-7th Coy arrived at their lodgings at about 0400hrs.
-Casualties on 10.12. for 7th Coy 3 KIA.
-Btn continuing field fortification work.”
09.00hrs Kusti sector CO reported:
“-Night 10./11.12. calm on the entire sector. Fore-post manning with new troops happened as planned.
-Recon patrol has spotted an enemy mortar position, from pt.33 bearing 41-00 range about 750m, which has been informed to the Mortar F.O.O.
-07.30 – 08.15hrs Entire sector being intensely shelled.
-Nothing else special.”
09.30hrs It was found that the enemy had used leaflets in their projectiles (at Jussi sector and battery positions).
10.43hrs 5.D HQ order:
“5.D CO orders that during the next day a prisoner is to be taken to find out about the enemy grouping, the prisoner is to be forwarded to V.KEr.P.4.
By order Chief of staff/II Bureau CO”
10.45hrs Forwarded to Jussi sector CO.
10.45hrs Jussi sector CO situational report was received.
11.12._09.30hrs:
“Enemy recon activities during the night has been more lively than before, specially at sector E.
In front of SU 7 the enemy attempted to build likely an infantry cannon position (coordinates available at artillery F.O.O.)
Starting 0430hrs some fire activities
0700 – 0830hrs Artillery strikes at the sector, among other points the vicinity of my command post. Projectiles have included propaganda leaflets.
At the moment relatively quiet.”
11.00hrs Rgt order K.D. N:o 237/I/2.sal (Appx. N:o 49)

11.05hrs Order to Puulaaki sector CO :
-Today the A sector is to be handed over to II/1.Pr. (Maj. Wiberg).
-II Btn CO shall be responsible for the B sector and shall be in readiness to use his other outfits as a reserve btn.
. Reconnoitre today the C sector to receive it, and be prepared to move the entire Btn to a new location.
-The Btn shall tomorrow (12.12.) move to a new location
-Responsibility for the new sector (B + C) shall be shifted to II Btn CO before dusk.
11.20hrs Puulaaki sector CO reported:
“Enemy advancing with about one Coy on the beach road about 1km from the blown up Kosenjoki rwy bridge. 10 tanks in front of the battle fore-posts”
12.40hrs Jussi sector CO reported:
“At least one, possibly three tanks have broken through at the Muolajärvi beach.”
12.42hrs Tank alarm for the entire Rgt.
12.45hrs Telephoned order from 5.D HQ (Res. Lt. Vartia)
“5.D order no723/III/61.b is modified so that JR14 is allowed to keep the old model AT guns. The new model 4 AT guns are to be handed over on 11.12. by 2000hrs.
The handing over is to be agreed between JR14 CO and Maj. Mäntylä.
_5.D CO (By order of II AC CO).”
12.50hrs Referring to the above-mentioned order Rgt CO phoned Capt. Kurenmaa at 5.D HQ explaining that it is quite impossible to carry out the order at the moment because enemy tanks are crawling about in the defensive positions. He asked that he would not have to hand over the weapons until the situation shall be past or, if there is no choice, a guarantee that replacement would be somehow made available, else there is going to be a gap in the front line.
No clear answer was received in this matter.
13.20hrs Puulaaki sector CO reported that there are four to five tanks in the terrain between Perojoki river and Saari forward strong-point; it appears they are unable to cross the river.
13.35hrs 1.D HQ report (Res.2nd Lt. Hannikainen):
“!.Pr. CO shall assume the command of the defence sector assigned to 1.D.on 12.12. up to 1200hrs, by which time 1.D HQ has moved to Kämärä village, and 1.D HQ shall take over the command of the sector.
Kev.Os.5 shall be transferred in the night of 11./12.12. to Kilteenlampi terrain.
By order/Chief of staff”.
13.45hrs The above-mentioned was forwarded to 1.Pr. HQ.
14.55hrs Since despite repeated requests to get the defence at Muolajärvi lake assigned to a dedicated outfit (since the ice could carry a man, it could not be considered a case of securing but a full fledged defence task) had been in vain, the Rgt CO issued the following order to the Reserve Btn CO:
“A crevasse is to be cut in the ice from mainland to Suurisaari island;
Suurisaari is to be manned permanently (so far only by night).”
14.58hrs Telephone message from 5.D. HQ: (Capt. Selinheimo):
“11.D observation post reports that at 1420hrs on the road SE of Perkjärvi lake there are about 60 lorries and tanks heading NW; more are coming. At 1300hrs at the same spot there were 10 tanks.
By order: Chief of staff.”
15.00hrs Forwarded to sector CO s adding the order to observe the said direction (listening).
15.10hrs Rgt Co phoned 1.D HQ to test the line.
He declared his opinion on the situation that had completely changed now that Muolajärvi lake had frozen over, and asked for action to be taken as soon as possible to establish a defence in this gap, more than 5 km wide.
He emphasized that the left flank of the sector is now open and it cannot be effectively enough be defended with available troops. If Russki has the wits to enter the ice the road is open across the lake up to Hotakka.
16.10hrs Rgt CO phoned 1.Pr. CO, asking for more detailed instructions how to hand over the Bofors AT guns. He informed that 5.D. Demands them to be handed over by 2000hrs and at the moment tanks are attempting to break through the stone hindrance. 1.Pr. CO ordered that AT gun platoon Arohonka shall be relieved by an equivalent AT gun platoon of I/1.Pr. As to place and action.
Since there was no choice Rgt CO decided to return Platoon Arohonka to 5.D. But still withhold the corresponding JP3 platoon subordinated to him.
At the same occasion 1.Pr. CO informed that I/1.Pr. Could not be used any more without his permission.
16.18hrs The above-mentioned was forwarded to Jussi sector CO.
The response:
“I cannot disengage Platoon Arohonka, because they are fighting. At night, maybe.”
16.30hrs 1.D report (Capt. Airaksinen):
“1.Pr. CO is allowed to hand over the AT guns to JR 14. More of them shall be made available, but it is not yet known when and where from.”
17.00hrs On 10.12. at night one enemy tank and on 11.12. 5 tanks were destroyed on the Väisänen clearings; one tank broke through via Muolajärvi beach as far as Rantalottala, where it was knocked out and later handed over to Defence Forces. 3 tanks were stuck in the hindrances and were later destroyed; One was shot up at SU7.
Also at the point where Kosenjoki and Peronjoki rivers meet 4 to 5 enemy tanks were stuck in the brook bed; II Btn was ordered to destroy them at night (failed to do that).
19.10hrs An enemy prisoner was taken in the command dugout. He had been taken during a forced recon in the night 10./11.12. in D sector at the stone hindrance.
He told among other matters:
-Age 36 yrs; Father imprisoned by GPU in 1928; he himself had sat 2 yrs for forging a letter of attorney, which crime he had been forced to commit; not a Communist party member.
-His outfit: I/7.Rgt/24.D.
-7th IR is bivouacking at the Taaperniemi road by Battalions, the nearest outfits about 1 ½ to 2 km from our lines; 7th IR comprises 3 Btns.
-Every day the front Btn is relieved, the Btn has had 3 platoons in the very first line (this is not credible).
-Each Btn comprises about 600 men; about 40% of the Btns have been destroyed during the battles so far.
-Listening posts have been placed behind the stone hindrance at night.
-There had been a telephone for listening on the wire between SU2 and SU1 (yesterday it was pulled back)
-Yesterday they lost about 50 men; The outfit in which he was withdrew and got lost (new, recently arrived outfit).
-The outfit had started off at the Estonian border on 27.10. and been here just one day; a signals man.
-There are next to none Finns.
-He said that everyone would like to come to our side but organizing that is impossible (They would come if they would not be fired at).
Rgt Commissar is alive.
-3 days ago their own artillery killed a lot of Russians; it could not be an error because the artillery was close. -For this the Artillery CO was taken away and shot.
-The troops are demanding airmen but it is said that the weather is not allowing that.
-Today only 5 tanks were left; more are expected to come today already.
-Supplying has been poor; once three days without food, then they were given water. Anyone complaining was threatened with a pistol; two Comrades were shot yesterday for refusing to go to the front line.

The prisoner had been at the moment of capture setting a phone cable about 100m from the stone hindrance to the enemy side; the rest of the 24 men were shot on the spot and one more had to be shot on the way back for resisting.
The forced reconnoitring was carried out by:
2nd Lt. K. Hankomäki and 36 men.
21,40hrs Puulaaki sector CO reported that the fore-posts at Kosenjoki (II/1.Pr.) have retaken the Kosenjoki fore-post that they had abandoned in the afternoon under enemy pressure.
Else the day had been calm; shelling here and there on the Rgt defence sector.
The planned relief on the A sector was disturbed considerably by the pressure at Kosenjoki.
23.50hrs Telephoned report from 1.Pr. HQ
“On 11.12. at 0800hrs enemy 24th D arrived at Perkjärvi. They shall set out from there on 12.12. Guarding must be intensified.
By order/ 1.D CO.”
24.00hrs Forwarded to Battalions.

JR 14, 12.12.1939

In the morning the enemy pressure restarted at Kolosenjoki so intensely that Lt. Perri's Coy of II/1.Pr. that was there was forced to withdraw.
08.05hrs Puulaaki sector CO phoned and reported that Kosenjoki is still in our hands, but only up to the rwy line, at the moment the front line comprises the line. SW of the rwy line there is a strong enemy presence.
09.35hrs Capt. Palkama of 1.D. HQ enquired about the situation.
Rgt CO briefed him.
In the same occasion Rgt CO discussed with the Chief of Staff and Di. CO about the situation, again emphasizing that Muolajärvi constitutes a gap and asking for action by the Division to settle the matter.
10.00hrs Enemy shelling restarted fairly intense being directed specially at SU5 which hereafter became the constant target of enemy fire (being situated on an obvious and visible spot it was just natural).
10.55hrs Jussi sector reporting:
“Enemy tanks have been busy since the morning; one tank has been spraying burning liquid to a distance of 10 to 15m on both sides of the tank.”
11.40hrs C sector CO (Lt. Standertskjöld-Nordenstam)reported:
“At 1030hrs we have taken 7 POWs of which two WIA, 5 MG s, about 70 rifles, a lot of hand grenades and cartridges, auto and sniper rifles, one LMG, a radio; plenty of fallen in action.”
At about 0900 at Jusi sector a couple of POWs had been taken, one of them WIA.
12.00hrs the POWs arrived at the dugout; there were 6 POWs (the remaining 3 via first aid post) who were sent to 1.D HQ.
12.30hrs From 1.D HQ arrived Captains Palkama and Kalpamaa to liaise.
12.40hrs 1.D HQ reported (Res. 2nd Lt. Suomela):
“1. Pr. Shall leave to JR14 the two borrowed AT guns. JR14 shall hand over to 1. Pr. Two old fashioned AT guns with their crews and material. This organization is temporary.
_1.D Chief of Staff.”
13.50hrs 1.Pr. HQ reported that 5 tanks have broken through W of the rwy line at the Forest guard house.
Immediate tank alert for the entire Rgt.
Order:
-one AT gun (Bofors) to be detached from Jussi sector and taken to Leipäsuo Rwy station to meet the tanks.
-one At gun from Ii/1.Pr. Right to N of Peronjoki.
-Capt.-. Rinne (liaison officer, 1. Pr. ) shall immediately proceed to Patja to get the two Bofors guns subordinated to the Rgt which led by him shall immediately be transferred in the Leipäsuo station terrain, and from there, situation allowing, to the Rgt terrain.
15.00hrs Puulaaki sector CO reported:
“In front of Saari forward strong-point there are 4 tanks roaming about and a couple of loads of ammunition, the draught horses having been shot. Also most likely a couple of infantry cannons.”
Rgt CO issued an order:
“To destroy these a brisk outfit is to be sent off, mortar and artillery support is to be used. Liaise with strong-point B3 F.O.O.”
16.50hrs Order to Reserve Btn CO:
“Stand by to man “Allan's blocking line” and to strike in the direction of either Jussi sector or II/1.Pr. Sector and man “Matti's blocking line”.
16.50hrs Order to Puulaaki sector CO:
“Saari forward strong-point task is altered to delaying task; MG s are to be removed to the main defence line.”
During the afternoon the enemy pressurizes specially at Muolajärvi beach and SU1,
Situation at Kosenjoki unclear because battle fore-posts are not situated in their defined positions.
17.30hrs Order to Reserve Btn CO:
“Secure to the right; set up observing and accurate listening to the right to detect any surprise. (Due to uncertainty as to II/1.Pr; is their defence going to hold?)
19.10hrs Puulaaki sector CO reported:
“I find myself in my new command post, tel. Connection Muki – Lusikka – Liina B.”
20.10hrs JP4 Adjutant Lt- Touri liaising with Rgt.
22.30hrs 1.D HQ reported (Res, 2nd Lt. Suomela):
“II AC CO orders JR14 CO to hand over immediately the remaining two new 5.D AT guns and the AT outfit to 5.D.
By order/1.D Chief of Staff”.
24.00hrs Puulaaki sector CO reported:
“During the day two tanks have been destroyed at the point where Perojoki and Kosenjoki flow together.”
The situation calmed down by the night. Basing on the observations made during the day Jussi sector CO deduced that the big tank remaining in front of SU7 is being used as a F.O.O. Observation post and decided to destroy it next day with a direct firing field gun.
By the night nine tanks had been destroyed on the Rgt sector.

JR 14, 13.12.1939

00.30hrs Res. 2nd Lt. Telaranta of III/JR31 reported to liaise.
He reported among other things:
“ II/JR31 find themselves on the Kyyrölä isthmus at the level of Parkkilanlampi.
-Btn Jänttinen (# of which he ignored) find themselves on the Muolaa-Pällilä isthmus, also I/JR31.
-III/JR31 find themselves on the Muolajärvi-Ayräpäänjärvi isthmus (directly subordinated to 1.D)
Rgt CO emphasized that the defence of Muolajärvi must urgently be taken into consideration, he also explained what action the Rgt had taken already.
07.50hrs Kosenjoki fore-post CO Lt. Perri telephoned and requested an artillery strike.
Yet he presented his request in such a manner that the Rgt CO and II/KTR5 CO both believed that it was just a case of exterminating a minor enemy outfit bothering the fore-post Therefore only a minor strike was called yet it was a serious situation, as it was found out later.
In the morning Jussi sector CO tried to knock out the tank in front of SU7 with a field gun but without success.
Instead, Res.2nd Lt. K. Hankomäki with a 5 man patrol destroyed the tank in the afternoon and at the same time another tank nearby.
-So by now a total of 15 tanks have been destroyed at Jussi sector.
08.40hrs Reserve CO reported:
“-Beach strong-point (at Muolajärvi lake) is manned. Strength one battle squad. -Tel.conn. Lusikka-Lampi1.
-Suursaari strong-point with phone connection: Lusikka – Lampi2. -Two war booty MG s have been sent there.”
15.00hrs Maj. Ingelius of 3.Pr arrived to liaise and reported that t3.Pr. Has moved during the 12./13.12. night to the Kämärä village terrain.
15.15hrs 1.Pr CO arrived at the command dugout.
He recounted that yesterday he had issued orders to II/1.Pr CO to retake the lost Kosenjoki fore-post; in addition he had promised to provide one rifle Coy from the reserve (I/1.Pr.) to be held in standby if the attempt should fail.
Yet now II/1.PR CO had reported him that the attempt had not been successful, instead there had been terrible casualties: almost half of Lt. Lehtonen's Coy , likewise 2nd Lt. Kuutti's and Lt. Perri's Coys.
The attack was lacking unified command. Three rifle Coys participated against my orders.
Battle recon had not been carried out at all, most likely.
16.00hrs To find out about the situation and to create a constant liaison a dispatch officer was sent to II Btn; his task was also to find out the status of the front and manning relief.
22.15hrs Dispatch officer returned reporting that in front of Saari forward strong-point 3 tanks have been destroyed with satchel charges.
Also: Lt. Pathan (4th Coy CO) is requesting an outfit to launch a minor attack.
Response: Nothing can be given from outside; he is allowed to carry it out on his own but it is not allowed to risk the front.
22.20hrs Res. 2nd Lt. Heikkilä set off to liaise with JR31.
(end of day).
