I thought to come here to look for the "mystery submachine gun" (edit: held by the soldier third from right) as published in a recent tweet by Sotaveteraaniliitto (War Veterans Association):

https://twitter.com/sotaveteraanit/stat ... 8161678338

I asked about this at mp.net, and was pointed out by member KIM that is likely a Bergmann MP35, since the clip is to the right side of the weapon, unlike MP20 and MP28 known to be available in Finland, the former bought by great quantities (for the time) for Suojeluskunta.

I was also pointed out by member 152H55 that the picture in said tweet is SA-Kuva 47749:

... and the next picture, 47750, shows the weapon better. Here is # 47750:

Hence, the opening post could be updated with a new weapon:

Only clear, reference type of photographs are listed here and not all photographs were such weapon can be seen.

Submachine Gun:

-- snip --

Bergmann:

113063-113064

MP 28 II:

113063-113064
Bergmann MP35:

47749-47750

Any idea where the Finns in general or that one soldier in particular have had access to a MP35, in 1941?

It IS the MP35 it has the slotted barrel jacket and in the lower image you can just see the "Bolt Action" cocking handle at the rear of the receiver

Palokangas's Small Arms in Finland part 3 page 194 mentions MP 35 as Bergmann m/35 among the mixed submachine guns that existed in very small numbers in Finnish inventory during World War 2. He lists it among older submachine guns (along Erma EMP) used by German troops stationed in northern during Continuation War and notes that small number of guns had cumulated to Finnish inventory, some of them among Lapland War, since some of the guns were shipped to Soviet Union among other weapons captured in Lapland War.

Still - it is weird to see MP 35 in use of Finnish Army. Kornetti (2nd Lieutent of Cavalry) Hämäläinen's long range recon was photographed in Tiiksjärvi (sector of Finnish 14th Division) in September, but according google-search there is a missing SA-kuva photo, which suggests that Hämäinen's patrol had been in Inari (northern Finland) in July of 1941.

Finnish Army did not generally issue magazine pouches for submachine gun mags and hence the magazine pouch hanging in belt of the soldier with MP 35 might be very good clue - is it German or Swedish?

At least to me the mag pouche look a lot like one of this pair of pouches:

Jorma Hämäläinen was a patrol leader in Osasto Marttina, which later became 3./Er.P 4. Below is a photograph of Hämäläinen's earlier patrol to the Kirov/Murman Railway between 1 and 16 August 1941. The patrol walked back to Tiiksjärvi. German sub-machine guns are listed in several Osasto Marttina's patrol reports in 1941-42.
