Carl af Björksten

Post by Hans N » 06 Jul 2006 18:53

I am looking for any kind of information regarding Carl af Björksten.

He was born on the 24 oct. 1894 and served in the famous Jaegerbattalion 27, came home and was promoted to Lieutenant and participated in the Civil War.

In april 1942 he took temporarily over the command of JR 13 as Lieutenent-Colonel after Major-General Snellman got wounded.

Thanks in advance

Sorry for the delay, but the only reference work I could think of - the biographies in "Suomen jääkärien elämäkerrasto 1975" - wasn't to be found either in my shelf or the local library.

The entry reads:

Ret. 27. Vääpeli 18, vänrikki 18, luutnantti 19, kapteeni 23, majuri 27, everstiluutnantti 41.

Employed in advertising business 27-31, as manager of Ab Rostfri in Gothenburg 31-. Finnish consul and founding member of Swedish-Finnish Society in G.

Winter War: battalion commander JR61 on Karelian Isthmus 40.
Continuation War: battalion commander III/JR13 41 and temp regiment commander 42.

Lives in Gothenburg.

Hope this helps.

(His regimental command appears to have been very short - a kind of honorary rward?)

My guess is that after Colonel Sundman took the command of 17th Division, af Björksten as the most senior battalion commander took temporarily over until a permanent replacement (Lt. Col. Runo Wiberg) was found.
