Hi,
Welcome to the Forum.
I moved your question here to a thread of it's own.
Do you happen to have any more info about the incident?
Regards, Juha

Re: Soviet fighter crash landing
Local old people say: Plane flew with some bombers and suddenly it come down to earth. It is propably shot down by AAA or by own bomber. That happened 11.00 am.
Somebody say the planes (bombers and fighters) was coming back from mission to Kajaani town or Kontiomäki railroad crossing and flying to north. This is only speculations of locals.
Plane destroyed totally in crash and fire after crashing. Pilot is buried near crash site by locals.

Hello!
You are sure, what date exact? The matter is that on 16-th of February the Air Forces of 9 armies flied only in area Salla – Kemijarvi. I think, that the question is February, 26-th.
This day 152 IAP bombed the bridge at Ristijarvi. One I-153 for the unknown reasons has lit up and has fallen near the railway. Antiaircraft fire was not. Presumably, the plane has lit up from explosion of the bombs "AO - 8" or malfunctions of a gasoline pipe line. Bombed from a dive. The plane has lit up during a dive. The pilot - second lieutenant V.I.Golubev. However on the Soviet data time - 16.45. But it needs to be specified.
One more fighter of 152 IAP was gone after a start in area Parvavara, but it is far.

Re: Soviet fighter crash landing
Thank You for information.
The date is taken form cross on the grave. It is written later by locals and can be wrong.
The crash site is in the side of railway, only 100m from railway bridge. This is exactly the same case.
I try to collect as much as possible data to make small poster and booklet to local museum. My wife was born in Ristijärvi an her ungle is actice in museum. I like to write the pilots name to cross allso. This may be all right? Now there is written "Unknown russian pilot, plane crashed 16.2.1940"
If You have some detailed information about pilot or the plane I´ll be very pleased.

Re: Soviet fighter crash landing
The same crash possibly mentioned here:
http://www.flightforum.fi/forum/index.p ... ic=80190.0
Info there from locals:
- fallen 11.00 O'clock
-5 machine guns
- was circling under 2-3 bombers, fallen after that
-possible hit by own bombers
-Ristijärvi being under the flight route from Lake Kurttijärvi ice base to Kajaani
-locals had evacuated the wreck (other source mentioning that the wreck had still been there in the 60's)
-possibly low wing plane
-USA licence made plane (possibly meaning engine, mentioned by a person seen a engine cylinder)
Regards, Juha

Re: Soviet fighter crash landing
The pilot - Golubev Valentin Ivanovich. The second lieutenant, the "younger pilot" (mladshij letchik) of 4 squadrons 152 IAP.
Was born in 1918, russian, member VLKSM.
In PKKA since 1937, has finished aviation military school in 1938.
The plane - I-153 "Chaika". Factory number 6820.
I hope, this pilot will cease to be "unknown person".
Thanks you.

Re: Soviet fighter crash landing
Hello Juha.
That is my text in flightforum and the same case.
Thanks to You Slon-76. Valentin will get his name to cross.
Should the cross be lutheran (is now), russian orthodox or something with red star? I do not have experience with that.

What means AO-8 ?Slon-76 wrote:Presumably, the plane has lit up from explosion of the bombs "AO - 8" or malfunctions of a gasoline pipe line.
Has somebody photos, drawings or more data about pilot or plane. I try to find him by google without results.
Markings and painting of the plane would be fine. I´ll make later a scale model of that individual plane (6820).

AO is a fragmentation bomb. The number indicates the overal weight.dh89 wrote: What means AO-8 ?
Re: Soviet fighter crash landing
Today (20.2.2020) is the 80th memorial day of the death of Valentin Golubev. The Russian Embassy in Helsinki has promised to set up a gravestone to Golubev´s forest grave and an information board (Finnish, English and Russian) about the fate of him near the grave. Hopefully they will be available by next summer.
