Thanks Larth! Esa's work on Soviet armour was especially helpful!

Meanwhile, I managed to get a copy of Niilo Lappalainen's Kuuterselkäkin murtui (Kuuterselka was breached, too). I just finished reading it. Here's some additional pieces of information regarding units involved at Kuuterselka:

Soviets

109th Army Corps, ca 20 000 men

72.D with 185th Tank Rgt and 351th AssGunRgt
General Major I Jastrepov
To Liikola via Kuuterselka

286.D
General Major M Grisin
To Sykiala via south of Kuuterselka

109.D with 31st Guards Tank Rgt and 1222th AssGnRgt
General Major N Truskin
To Siikala via southside of railway

1st Mobile Group
Col. A Kovalevski
152nd Tank Brigade
26th Guards Tank Rgt
To encircle the Cavalry Brigade

2nd Mobile Group

Col V Volkov
1st Red Flag Tank Brigade
27th Tank Rgt

Additional reserves
220th Tank Brigade
952nd Heavy AssGn Rgt
30th Guards Tank Rgt

(Brigade ca 60 tanks, Regiment ca 20 tanks)

Order of Advance:

Kuuterselka:

First:
14th IR + 185th Tank Rgt + Two AssGn companies from 351th
At Merisuo: 100 Rocket launchers

Next:
133th IR to encircle Kuuterselka from north

128th IR as a reserve

Main breakthrough point only some tens of meters in width

At Kuuterselka village by noon.

2nd Mobile Group left Kuuterselka at ca 16:30

Sahakyla:

At Left:
Sahakyla-Sykiala sector 456th IR (109.D)

Sahakylä-Kuuterselka sector 998th IR (286.D) targeting Mustamaki

At Middle: 996th IR through the Merisuo marsh

At Right: 994th IR Kuuterselanjarvi isthmus

Soviet forces at the end of day 14.6.1944

Kuuterselka: 72.D defending against Finnish counterattack

All quiet at Sahakyla. 286.D at hedgehog defense towards north and north-east from Mustamaki. 109.D got involved at fight at Mustakyla with the four tank regiments.

The book makes an assumption of the Soviet battle among themselves at Mustamaki having actually taken place.

The unit functioning very efficiently was the 2nd Mobile Group.

Regarding JR 53 at VT Line

Overall: the battalions had all their companies manning the VT line due to a very wide sector they had. They were not able to have any reserves and no depth to their defense lines.

II / JR53
Left: 5.K / Capt Veikko Hauru
+ 14.K III plat.
+ antitank plat
+ JR53 Jaeger platoon

Middle: 6.K / Ltn Jaakko Piuhola
by the road: Ltn Runo Lamminen I plat
left of road: II and IV plat
right of road: III plat
+ one platoon from 7.K / Vänr. Toivo Hellen
+ Vänr Vilho Pihlman II plat / 14.K (75PAK)
+ one platoon from 10.K (replaced the regimental Jaeger platoon)

Right, at Merisuo
7.K (minus one platoon) / Ltn Martti Kaila

I/JR53
Worked very hard the whole night of 13.6. to improve the VT line on their sector. Once the battle commenced, the battalion was in effect lead by Cpt Pellervo Terho, as Jagala already commented on the previous page.

Left – Raivola / Sahakyla, VT Line in an incomplete state
3.K / Ltn Arvo Siren

Middle, the most complete VT Line sector at I/JR53 sector
2.K Ltn Erik Francke

Right , bad positions, firing sectors not cleared
1.K / Ltn Mauri Helle

Reserves: 1.K / PionP26

Reinforcements

I/JR48

Jaeger Platoon / Vänr Matti Jaakkola at Kuuterselka Sulkulinja

Order of advance towards Kuuterselka (counterattack)

Left 2.K / Capt Eino Rinne
Right: 3.K / Capt Mauri Hyppönen Kuuterselka hill and to west
1.K / Ltn Unto Rankinen as reserve

Withdraw from Kuuterselka at ca 12:30

Had panzerschrecks and fausts, but no PstK. Sulkulinja was still empty when their first elements arrived. Withdrew from village mostly without fighting. Could have held Kuuterselka for a few hours at least?

Set a defensive line north of Kuuterselka:
Left from road: 1.K
Right from road: 2.K and 3.K

Er.P 13 + 45.K (Antitank guns) Major Kalevi Leino
Ordered to seal the Kuuterselanjarvi isthmus, advanced with 3.K / Ltn Heimo Kukkasjärvi

Met a strong enemy already only a few km from Liikola. Set a defensive line north of Kuuterselanjarvi. Road to Mustamaki remained with enemy.

1.K/JP6 / Ratsumestari Vaaraniemi at Mustamaki (from Liikola)

Martti, the time line is from Juri Kilin's article on p.239 of Sodan taisteluja 2. It is based on Soviet archives. Palokangas and Raunio agree with the source you mention, on p.242. Neither of them mentions the general joining the battle! Thanks, Petri

Perhaps we are dealing with Moscow time (UTC+3), i.d. 6.40 p.m. in Finnish time (UTC+2)? Ten minutes difference is easily explained by the difference between Soviet and Finnish clocks.

P.S. I wonder what is the Soviet point of view on this "raid"?

Martti, it is in Finnish time already. Maybe it took a bit over 1 hour to secure the area, before it was reported to have been taken?

On a separate note: I wonder where the T34-85s in Kuuterselka came from, from which unit?

Käkelä mentions several T34-85s destroyed by the Stu-40 battalion. I have cross checked the units involved in the area against the Soviet armoured units in Carelian Istmus thread. Maybe I have missed something:

72.D with 185th Tank Rgt (T-34 76) and 351th AssGunRgt (ISU-152)

109.D with 31st Guards Tank Rgt (KV-1 but which model?) and 1222th AssGnRgt (SU-76m)

1st Mobile Group
152nd Tank Brigade (T-34 76)
26th Guards Tank Rgt (IS-2)

2nd Mobile Group
1st Red Flag Tank Brigade (T-34 76)
27th Sep GuardsTank Rgt (IS-2)

Additional reserves
220th Tank Brigade (T-26)
952nd Heavy AssGn Rgt (SU-76)
30th Guards Tank Rgt (T-34 76)

109.D with 31st Guards Tank Rgt (KV-1 but which model?) and 1222th AssGnRgt (SU-76m)
31 and 351 Guards Regiments (and the last formally speaking was still 1439 SP Artillery Regiment) in the first half of the day of 14 June were in the Vammelsu sector with the 46 Rifle Division
Additional reserves
220th Tank Brigade (T-26)
952nd Heavy AssGn Rgt (SU-76)
30th Guards Tank Rgt (T-34 76)
They didn't participate in action on 14 June, and both brigades didn't do that on 15 June as well (I'm not sure about the 952 Regiment)
In general disposition was as follows: 72 Rifle Division with attached 185 Tank Regiment, 1222 Self-Propelled Regiment, 404 Artillery Regiment (from 109 Division) and two regiment of the 18 Mortar Brigade attacked in the sector between Peraäho and Alamäa having regiments in two echelons, 286 Rifle Division with 98 Tank Regiment and one regiment of the 18 Mortar Brigade - from Alamäa to Merisuo swamp, having regiments in three echelons. Both advanced in the general direction to the north-west. After reaching the line (approximately) Järvi - Mustamäki the 286 Division was to commit the second-echelon regiment along the road to Mustamäki, which was then to advance with the main forces along the rail road, sending elements to Sykiälä.
381 and 602 Rifle Regiments of the 109 Rifle Division were in the second echelon of the corps north of Raivola in readiness to develop success to Liikola. 456 Rifle Regiment occupied positions in front of Sahakulä. After the main attack started it was to advance to the north-west along the rail road outflanking Sahakulä from the north.
From a copy of the 109 corps' combat order of 13 June 1944/appendices to the war diary of the 21 Army (TsAMO f.375, d.6675, d.389, ll.63-65)
72 Division had 133 and 187 Rifle Regiments in the first echelon and 14 Regiment in the second. 286 Rifle Division was deployed in a column of regiments: first 994 Regiment, then 996 and then 998.
Artillery of the corps in addition to organic units included 46 AT Brigade (76 and 57-mm guns), 18 Mortar Brigade (120-mm mortars), 35 Howitzer Brigade (122-mm howitzers), 85 Heavy Howitzer Brigade (152-mm howitzers), 106 HP Howitzer Brigade (203-mm howitzers), 34 Separate Artillery Battalion (280-mm howitzers), 260 Cannon Regiment, 28 Corps Regiment, 3 Guards Mortar Brigade (heavy rocket launchers) and 24 Guards Mortar Regiment (132-mm rocket launchers on truck chassis).
AFVs: 185 Tank Regiment - 11 T-34-76 by the evening of 13 June, 98 Tank Regiment - 21 T-34-85, 1222 Self-Propelled Artillery Regiment - 17 SU-76.

Thank you very much for this little piece of info (well for the other pieces too), first time I have seen some proof of that the T-34-85 tanks was used allready in the beginning of the Viborg-operation, have not seen anything that could point out that the type was in use at the Carelian Istmus before 25/6 1944.

Thanks again and best regards

Art, getting a cohesive overview of the situation from Finnish sources was not an easy task. While I was able to get, although only after reading a dozen books or so, a good understanding of the Finnish units at Kuuterselka, it was another thing with the Russian units.

The situation must have been very chaotic from Finnish point of view, which should not be a surprise given for an example the order for elements of Armoured Division to counter attack and take back the VT line, although at that time the Red Army was present in overwhelming numbers.

As for Kilin's summary at "Sodan taisteluja", it is not a detailed view at all. There are maps of the area, but he goes on to describe events at very high divisional level. He does not really talk of any armoured elements supporting the various divisions, he just talks about divisions.

The most detailed description came from Tapio Tiihonen's book, but I am not familiar with him enough to be able to determine how credible writer he is. On the other hand he writes with perhaps too much passion, with an agenda he wants to deliver, at the same time he seems to really have done his homework.

Even Tiihonen, though, lists that according to one source, and according to other source, and then giving a different picture of Red Army units in battle. This is why I was interested to learn whether the sources you've got would be available to me too.

Let us take Tiihonen's more controversial claim and try to get a picture of his credibility via comparing his research to archive sources you have available:

Tiihonen makes a comment there was a big tank battle between to Red Army units, by having looked at the battle reports and casualty reports of the Red Army units at Mustamaki on night between 14. and 15 of June 1944. He claims there were no Finnish units there at times, so the casualties must have been the outcome of the said two Soviet divisions.

I will take his comment of having no Finnish units in Mustamäki at the time by face value, as the movements of friendly units are (quite) well documented.

Can you see what casualties and battles are reported at Mustamäki on nighg of 14/15 june at Mustamäki? We can then draw our own conclusions.

Thanks, Petri

What are Tihonen's sources? Does he have a reference to Terekhov, 1965, or may be he provides a direct reference to TsAMO? If the latter is the case, what are the exact references?
