Re: Happy independence day!
We cannot tell what the fate of Finland may be, but no more mournful spectacle could be presented to what is left of civilised mankind than that this splendid Northern race should at last worn down and reduced to a servitude worse than death by the dull brutish force of overwhelming numbers.
If the light of freedom which still burns so brightly in the frozen North should be finally quenched, it might well herald a return to the Dark Ages, when every vestige of human progress during two thousand years would be engulfed.
Winston Churchill, Jan 20 1940
Happy birthday, independent Finland! Here's to many more!

Re: Happy independence day!
Thank you all for remembering Finnish Independence Day, which takes place in a wintery weather even "south" in Helsinki this year.
There was a brief traditional ceremony this morning at the Hietaniemi Cemetery, where an honorary guard was placed by the Hero Cross and the tombstone of Marshal Mannerheim. A small detachment from the Guards Battalion was present as the Commander of Helsinki Garrison laid wreaths on the Cross and on Marshal's grave.

"Finlands sak är vår" on Yle Tv2 at 19:10. Time to remember also the Swedish volunteers for their part in ensuring an independent Finland today.

Re: Happy independence day!
Today Helsinki has very different weather for the 94th Independence Day from the blizzards of last year.
Re: Happy independence day!
As you know pretty much the whole autumn was unusually warm this year, so the winter is late. Personally I would not mind if we would this time have less snow than last winter, remembering the complications that it created. Anyway, happy independence day everyone!Hanski wrote:Today Helsinki has very different weather for the 94th Independence Day from the blizzards of last year.
Military parade coming up on YLE TV2 in 18:20.

BTW: I finally updated the website yesterday with T-28 and T-34 page.
Re: Happy independence day!
Part of the Finnish Independence Day tradition in Helsinki is the torch procession of students.
The torch procession was arranged for the first time in 1951, the year of Marshal Mannerheim's death. The event started by laying wreaths on the Hero graves and Mannerheim's grave, after which about 2000 students marched in torch procession to the Senate Square, to listen to speeches and songs by male choirs. There were plenty of general public as spectators, and ever since the torch procession has become a shared event for all Helsinki people.

In 2012, we have a more "traditional" winter weather for the 95th anniversary of Finland's independence.
Cheers, everyone!
