And going back to the Civil War....Vapaussoturin valloituslaulu

Kauvan on kärsitty ryssien valtaa
Suomen kansan vapautta suojellessa.
Ylös pojat Pohjanmaan!
Urhot kalliin Karjalan!
Jäämit ja Savon miehet rintamahan!

Sotahan nyt marssimme kotikulta jääköön
Jääkäriveri tässä velvoittaa.
Ylös veljet valkoiset!
Alas ryssät punaiset!
Ei auta vihamiestä armahtaa!

Voittoja väkeviä saatu jo monta
Meillä on Valkoisessa Suomessa:
Oulu olkoon omamme!
Vaasa varsin varmamme!
Viipuria vastahan nyt vierimme!

Veriset on taistelut takanamme käyty
Kuka heitä kaikkia muistaakaan
Vaskivesi, Varkaus!
Mäntyharjun harppaus!
Karjalan kaikkivoipa varjelemus!

Hannilan harjuilla pommit ne paukkuu!
Raudussa shrapnellit räiskähtelee!
Ahvola se ankarin!
Suninmäki sankarin!
Pullilankin punikit viel' rangaistaan!

Tulkohon ryssiä tuhannen tuhatta!
Karjalan armeija kestää sen.
Aika on jo ahdistaa!
Punakaartit puhdistaa!
Venäläisen verikoiran karkoittaa!

Kuolema korkea - sankarin palkka!
Urhojen haudoilla hurratahan.
Ruumis saakoon haavan vaan!
Kuulat käykööt kulkuaan!
Sielu jääpi perinnöksi syntymämaan.

Viaporin linnahan leijonalippu
Jukoliste, poijat, me nostetahan!
Suomen voimat näytetään!
Keinot karskit käytetään!
Jääkäriveri tässä velvoittaa!

The Vapaussoturin Conquest song is about the southern Ostrobothnia Jaeger legend and veteran of seven wars Antti Isotalo (1895-1964), and his warrior reputation. Isotalo was involved in the First World War on the German eastern front in 1916, the Finnish War of 1918, the Olonets Expedition in 1919, Rotary Lake suojelusjoukoissa 1919-1920, Viena Karelia, 1921-1922, and the Winter and the Continuation War. His audacious jääkärivärväysseikkailunsa are well known. "

Long shall be served ryssien power
Finland, protecting the freedom of the people.
Top Ostrobothnia boys!
Karelia mighty expensive!
Jäämit and Savo men breast stomach!

Sotahan now I am leaving them to march home the gold
Jaeger blood in this order.
Top white brothers!
Russians down the red!
Anger does not help a man have mercy!

Gains obtained for a number of fortified
We have White in Finland:
Oulu let ours!
Vaasa quite varmamme!
Vyborg vastahan vierimme now! :,:

Bloody battles have taken place behind
Who will remember them all else
Vaskivesi, Theft!
Mäntyharju leap!
Karelia omnipotent varjelemus!

Hannila ridges bombs to bullets!
Raudussa Shrapnel räiskähtelee!
Ahvola its most severe!
Sun Hill a hero!
Pullilankin Reds Still punished!

Tulkohon Russkies thousand thousand!
Karelian Army will take it.
The time is already anxious!
Red Guards, to clean!
Russian blood banish the dog!

Death of a high - a hero salary!
Urhojen hurratahan graves.
Funeral saakoon but wound!
Balls käykööt march!
Jääpi inherited the soul of country of birth.

Viaporin linnahan lion flag
Jukoliste, poijat, we nostetahan!
Finnish forces are showing!
The means used karskit!
Jaeger blood in this order!

And I suspect this is well post-war but it seems fitting.....

Kari Tapio - Taistelija

Taistelija on Jori Sivosen säveltämä ja Timo Mäenpään sanoittama laulu.
Fighter: sung by Jori Sivonen, music and lyrics by Timo Mäenpää

Well... how would I put it politely... these songs by Kari Tapio are certainly not historical Winter War or Continuation War music, but tributes to war veterans from recent years, and if I may say so, their tone is quite melodramatic despite the illustrations with war time photos - they might even be seen as seeking commercial profit from the veterans' achievements, like selling T-shirts and other souvenir merchandise with reprinted WWII images on them. Quite frankly, with his light entertainment music Kari Tapio goes beyond what I would call Finnish historical tradition.

Conquest song of Civil War Freedom Fighter

We have long suffered Russkie rule
Protecting the freedom of Finnish people.
Rise Ostrobothnian boys!
Heroes of dear Karelia!

(Jäämi was an ancient Finnish tribe)

We are marching to war leaving dear home
Jaeger blood obliges us.
Rise White brothers!
Down Red Russkies!
We can´t mercy enemy!

We have already gained many heavy victories
In our White Finland:
Oulu be ours!
Vaasa ours quite sure!
Against Vyborg we are now rolling!

Bloody battles we have behind
Who will remember them all
Vaskivesi, Varkaus!
Leap of Mäntyharju!
Allmighty guardian of Karelia!

On Hannila ridges bombs are banging!
In Rautu shrapnels crackling!
Ahvola is most severe!
Suninmäki most herous!
Pullila Reds will be punished!

Russkies may come thousand thousands!
Karelian army will take it.
It is time to pursue!
Clean Red Guards!
Expell Russian´s blood hound!

High death - hero´s pay!
By heroes´graves will be cheered.
Body may get just a wound!
Bullets may fly their way!
Soul will stay as heritage of motherland.

Over Suomenlinna fortress a lion flag
Goddamn, boys, we hoist!
Finland´s forces we show!
We use harsh means!
Jaeger blood obliges us!

IIRC "Taistelija" was written and recorded for the last but one nationwide joint fundraising drive for the benefit of war veterans in need, i.e. Kari Tapio, the composer and the lyricist did it "pro bono" for the TV and radio campaign and the royalties went to the vets' associations.

Melodramatic or not, the song was (in my experience) received rather favourably and as striking a genuine note (as opposed to some other efforts by schlager writers and artists to milk the sentiment and to ride that wave, so to speak) by the vets themselves.

Good film clip there as background Mika, Kiitos...........Nigel

Katri Helena - I Hear Your Voice
Originally La Riva Bianca - La Riva Nera (white beach, black beach) an Italian anti-war song which became well known in the early 70's - also a Spanish version - La orilla blanca, la orilla negra.
Katri Helena recorded it in Finland under the name Äänesi mä kuulen (I Hear Your Voice)
The original name = La riva bianca la riva nera
Composer Sciorilli Eros
The original words Alberto Testa
Translated by Heikki Harma
Recorded 11/16/1971

Not sure what the lyris are in Finnish, but here is the English version of the Italian original

Captain! Please Sir, stop here!
- I'm so tired. Yes, I'll stop.
* Be careful! They're firing! Stay down!
- I'll be careful, but protect yourself too. Tell me, soldier, where are you from?
* I come from a village near yours, but on the river there is the border, the white shore, the black shore,
and on the bridge I see a flag, but it's not that which is in my heart.
- So, soldier, you are not one of mine...
* We are wearing different uniforms, as you know.
- No, I don't know it, as I can no longer see. I was shot and perhaps you fired at me.
* Captain, what can we do? This is war and it may not change.
- On the hill there sings the machinegun, the green grass turns to straw and along the river the battle continues, but for us it has already ended.
* Captain, I have to go.
- I'm coming with you. You must not leave me.
* No, I will not leave you. I already know it, I'll be close to you forever.
-- All is over, the border is silent, the white shore and the black shore,
while a woman weeps in the evening and calls a name that will never reply.

* Captain! Please Sir, stop here!

- I'm so tired. Yes, I'll stop.

How about this one. Sounds patriotic to me.....

Pohjan Laulu (Pohjan Sotilassoittokunta) - Suomen Laulu

Säv. Fredrik Pacius, suom. san. Taavi Hahl

"Olenko tosiaan säveltänyt jotakin näin kaunista?!"

Kuule, kuinka soitto kaikuu, Väinön kanteleesta raikuu!
Laulu Suomen on! Laulu Suomen on!
Kuule, hongat huokaileepi, kuule, kosket pauhaileepi!
Laulu Suomen on! Laulu Suomen on!

Kuule, hongat huokaileepi, kuule, kosket pauhaileepi!
Laulu Suomen on! Laulu Suomen on!

Kaikkialla ääni kaikuu, kaikkialla kielet raikuu.
Laulu Suomen on! Laulu Suomen on!
Sydäntä jos suotu sulle, murheess', ilossakin kuule
Suomen laulua! Niin, Suomen laulua!

Sydäntä jos suotu sulle, murheess', ilossakin kuule
Suomen laulua! Niin, Suomen laulua!

Here is another version of same song La Riva Bianca - La Riva Nera. Marion Rung - Valkea ranta, musta ranta (White beach, black beach). Lyrics of this version is closer to original version than Katri Helena's version's.

That song ends with words" Our brotherhood is eternal". (Finland and Germany).
