Well they could, but this information was from 2006, maybe you should contact Keskinen or Stenman, they probably knows best.

Worth reading if interested.

Finish fighter aces

#7

Post by Swing » 18 Mar 2018, 18:44

Some time ago I bought a Finnish knife (puukko). Potentially it was belonged to one of Finnish biplane fighter aces. Warpath is unusual. There are Siverskaja, Krasnogvardeisk (Gatchina), Smolensk and Jermolino airfields in Russia among indicated ones. Can anyone identify the knife’s owner and clear situation with Finnish pilots at German East front?

Hi!

A very nice puukko indeed.

One candidate might be Ltn/Capt Pehr-Eric Kristian Ahonius.

Perhaps something to do with the when Finns bought
some I-153 from Germans, and flying them to Finland through USSR?

Hi, Juha! I thought about Ahonius but I have no evidences. Timeline: Hanko - 1941, German East front - ???, Suursaari - March of 1942. AFAIK purchases of I-153 from Germany were later - in the end of 1942. It would be nice to find some additional data.

I would place my bet on a mechanic.
Firstly judging by the place names.
Smolensk, Jermolino were places where FAF mechanics salvaged some wrecked DB-3, DB-3F and Pe-2 bombers.
Secondly by the quality of the work of the pieces. FAF mechanics were "jacks of every trade", by necessity they had to be.

On the other side Turku, Nummela, Römpötti and others are airfields were I-153 fighters were based. DB-3, DB-3F and Pe-2 are out of the game. Only planes from Squadron No. 6 (Lentolaivue 6) are possible...

I'm not completely sure about that.
And the timeline doesn't fit completely either.

Dear all!

Still think Lotvonen has a very good point, that it could be about a mecanic, its not about planes in particular, not about units in perticular, cause as with almost every one every individual person, you could change uniti several times, So, as I slowly by reasons I do belive, look at war diaries from Llv 16 of a Petter... And before his duties?

Best regards

Esa K
