Post by Swing » 22 Aug 2012 20:08

Looking for detailed biographical data of colonel Gustav Ehrnrooth. I know he was the commander of cavalry brigade (1941-1942) and HRR (1942-1944). I am interested in his military career, decorations, photos, pre and post war life.....thanks in advance.

[1] Itsenäisen Suomen kenraalikunta, p. 61, shows an unexplained two-year gap here. I suspect that this is an error, and either Ehrnrooth's tenure as ADC lasted until 1928 or his tenure as chief of 4th Squadron started already in 1926.
[2] The law officially establishing the Finnish Defense Forces wasn't passed until 1928, and until that date the officers' appointments in their positions were nominally provisional. Defense Establishment (puolustuslaitos) was the official name of the Finnish Defense Forces 1922-39.

The Mobilization, Winter War and the Interim Peace

Chief of Staff, III Army Corps, 12 October 1939 - 9 June 1941 ● Appointed for the office of senior class lieutenant-colonel in the Defense Establishment, 1 March 1941.

Continuation War

Commander of Häme Mounted Regiment, 9 June 1941 - 18 June 1941 ● Commander (temporary) [3] of Cavalry Brigade, 18 June 1941 - 28 April 1942 ● Commander of the Häme Mounted Regiment, 28 April 1942 - 3 August 1944 [4] ● Chief of Staff, Fortification Planning Staff, 7 September 1944 - 4 November 1944 ● At the disposal of kenraaliluutnantti Waldemar Hägglund for special duties, 4 November 1944 - 15 December 1944.

[3] The substantial commander was nominally kenraalimajuri Woldemar Oinonen who at the time was entrusted the command Group Oinonen (Group O).
[4] Gustaf Ehrnrooth was removed from the command of Häme Mounted Regiment on 3 August 1944 by kenraalimajuri Erkki Raappana. He was dissatisfied with the performance of forces under Ehrnrooth's command during Finnish counter-attacks in the Battle of Ilomantsi. However, Ehrnrooth appears to have remained nominally in command until 7 September 1944. Already during the defensive battles in June 1944, when Cavalry Brigade had performed under expectations, Gustaf Ehrnrooth's relations with the brigade commander kenraalimajuri Lars Melander were fraught with tension. On 13 June Melander demanded Ehrnrooth's dismissal, but withdrew the demand two days later.

Postwar

Commander of the Military District of Porvoo, 15 December 1944 - 28 June 1950 ● Appointed for the office of colonel in the Defense Establishment, 30 March 1945 ● Commander of the Military District of Helsinki, 28 June 1950 - 1 December 1952 ● Chief of the Military District of Helsinki, 1 December 1952 - 16 April 1955 ● Commander of the Military Province of Uusimaa and Chief of the Garrison of Helsinki, 16 April 1955 - 7 December 1958 ● Appointed for the office of major-general in the Defense Establishment, 1 May 1955 ● Retired upon reaching the mandatory retirement age, 7 December 1958.

He also held a great number of commissions of trust, e.g. Chief of the Honor Guard at Marshal Mannerheim's funeral in 1951 and Director of Field Riding Events at the Helsinki Olympic Games, 1952.

Great! Thank you very much, Mikko H. Your information can be a precious adornment of Wikipedia! Could you please indicate main decorations of colonel Ehrnroot. I guess he had a lot of them.
