JR4, HQ WD continued. =(Jalkaväkirykmentti 4. esikunta )

Date 28.6.44
Report on Russki breakthrough S of Niiniselkä, basing on the reports Col.Lt. Airila and Maj. Holopainen.28.6.44 18.30hrs:
I Btn: In the morning tank noise was hear on “Ymoeta” (? SIC!) road but since the corduroy road at the bog about 2km S of the crossroads had been dismantled (due to lack of explosives) the tanks made a full turn and vanished. Also during the morning very lively motor traffic was observed in the direction of “Kuoskala” road. In the afternoon there were again on “Kuoskala” road tanks with men on deck . Abt. 18.00hrs as the Btn was to move to new delaying positions the Russki launched an intense tank attack. A number of tanks managed to break through but the men on top of them were all shot. At the same time a Russki patrol penetrated in the terrain between the roads. Yet the Btn managed to salvage their equipment mainly throught forest. Several hundreds of Russkies were destroyed, among others 300 in the E positions.

II Btn: Russki tried all day to build bridges to replace the ones we had broken on the E shore of Puskuselkä, but these attempts were thwarted. In the evening it was found that a strong (enemy) patrol was trying to get to the isthmus between “Holopainen” and Puskuselkä.
At abt. 18.00hrs it was found that Russki had cut the Puskuselkä road S of Niiniselkä. The “gang” scraped together at the spot tried to break through but did not succeed. At the same time Russki cut the road on both sides of the command post that was situated 2km from Puskuselkä village to Niiniselkä. Consequently as the HQ were scattered the Btn could not be controlled. Companies were scattered. Battle baggage train was surrounded. Fortunately all field kitchen vehicles had just left the “motti” area.
Russki attack was timed at the same moment on both sides and they obviously had wiretapped our phone conversations thus finding out that the battalion was about to be shifted to the next delay position.

23.00hrs Maj. Mattila, Pion.P.22 CO, reported to Col. He had received orders to repoert to all disengaging units in JR4 at their disposal.
(Margin remark: Maj. M. was tasked to secure on the right wing of III Btn the brook running SE to prevent enemy from surprising from the direction of Säntämäki.)
23.50hrs Hannila reported: 7 tanks destroyed of which 4pcs with 75mm gun, the rest with Pz.Schreck.
III Btn destroyed 2 of those.
2nd Lt. Kataja Aimo posted on this date from III/JR4 to 38.SotaS. (=hospitalized, tr.rem.)

29.6.44
00.45hrs Lt. Rautala's runner arrived equipped with report sent at 21.00hrs
Message contents:.
At abt. 20.30hrs I met Russki head on in the bog narrows abt 1,5km off from our target.
We tried to attack but there were such a lot of Russkies that their fire stopped us. Russki tried to surround us on both flanks so my outfit had to withdraw. The outfit panicked a little. Now I am in positions at the road.
