Captive russian pilots

Post by farmer » 05 Nov 2016 09:25

Hi guys!

I found interesting information in the book of N. Lappalainen "VALKEASAARI MURTUU".
He writes that one russian pilot was captured by finnish troops on 9th of June, 1944:

"Aamupäivällä tuli tiedustelutoimistoon tieto, että Lentorykmentti 3:n esikuntaan oli tuotu venäläinen lentäjä. Kapteeni Josef Weiner (IV AK) lähti häntä kuulustelemaan. Lentäjä kertoi, että sen päivän tykistövalmistelu ja ilmahyökkäykset olivat pelkkää esivalmistelua. Varsinainen suurhyökkäys alkaisi vasta huomenna.Weiner palasi kiireesti esikuntaan kertomaan tärkeät tietonsa."

I have some thoughts about who it could be, but I need a confirmation.
Could anybody help me to find a record of interrogation of that pilot or any other info concerning this case, indicating a source?

Thanks

Lentorykmentti 3. Toimisto III (SPK 17983): "9 June 1944. [...] 3.15 p.m. Captain Weiner brought with him radio operator and gunner Starshina Byihovtsev from a [shot down] PE-2 belonging to the 32 BAP. During the interrogation the prisoner told that at least 180 two-engine (planes) have been transferred to the Karelian Isthmus and that according to a rumour the general offensive will begin at 6.00(?) p.m on 9 June 1944.
9.6.1944. [...] 15.15. Kapt. Weiner toi mukanaan esikuntaan PE-2 koneen rad.sähk. ja kk. ampuja vääpeli Byihovtsevin 32. PommiLeL. Kuulusteluissa ilmoitti vanki, että ainakin 180 2-moottorista saapunut Kannakselle ja huhun mukaan vanki kuullut yleishyökkäyksen alkavan 9.6.44 klo 18.00(?) Kannaksella. [...]
According to Prisoners of War and Internees - A Book of Articles by the National Archives, Byhovtsev was flying with Tu-2 from 132 BAP when it was shot down at Kanneljärvi. He was returned to the Soviet Union on 21 October 1944.

Thank you very much, Mangrove!
To tell you the trooth I was mistaken in my investigation, so it's great that you could help me.

Also I am interested in more records of interrogation of other russian pilots, captured on 9th of June, especially:
1. Obidin N.N., leut., pilot of IL-2, 52 OKAE, captured near Termola (sector of 2.D)
2. Fedotov T.S., j.leut., pilot and Koryshev A.A. leut., navigator of IL-4, 836 BAP (no more info concerning a location of a capture, somewere on Karelian istmus)
3. Balashov P.I., j.leut, pilot; Prihod'ko A.A., j.leut, navigator, Martchenko F.R. s.serg., gunner, Serebryannikov L.P.,s.serg., gunner, everybody - a team of IL-4, 55 BAP. The plane was shut down near Lempaala (sector of 2.D) and parashuted near or into Silantojarvi. There is no info about them after the war completion, so I suppose they died, but may be ......

I really eppreciate your efforts.

From the war diary of Jalkaväkirykmentti 7 (SPK 9599): "At 10.35 a.m., the anti-aircraft unit at Termola scored a direct hit on the enemy's ground attack aircraft. The aircraft crashed circa kilometre north-east of the Termola barrack. After a short pursuit, the pilot was captured and gave valuable information regarding the large ground and air forces concentrated by the enemy in the Karelian Isthmus".
Klo 10.35 sai Termolan it.jaos osuman vihollisen maataistelukoneeseen, joka syöksyi n. km:n päähän Termolan kasarmista koilliseen. Lyhyen takaa-ajon jälkeen vangitulta ohjaajalta saatiin arvokkaita tietoja vihollisen suurista maa- ja ilmavoimien keskityksistä Karjalan Kannakselle.

Here's all destroyed IL-4 claims made by Finnish pilots and anti-aircraft units on 9 June 1944:

1 DB-3F at 5.20 p.m. at Hartonen by II/5. Kev.It.Ptri.

2 DB-3F between 4.50 and 6.00 p.m at Kivennapa by Lt. Teromaa and Riekki from 1./HLe.Lv.26.

From the war diary of 5./JR 6: "9 June 1944. [...] 7.00 p.m. Our fighter shot down an enemy bomber in an aerial combat. The ground caught fire due to the impact. Three aviators bailed out from the plane, one of which fell down without a parachute. The other [survived] aviator, a Russkie Junior lieutenant fell down next to our company and was arrested by our company. The other aviator was as well arrested in a forest. Apart from these, two men burned to death inside the plane".
9.6.44. [...] 19.00. Oma hävittäjämme ampui yhden vih. pommituskoneen ilmataistelussa alueelle, joka osumasta syttyi palamaan. Palavasta koneesta hyppäsi 3 lentäjää laskuvarjoilla alas, joista 1 tuli suutarina maahan. Toinen lentäjistä, ryssän aliluutnantti, putosi komppaniamme alueelle, joka tuli komppaniamme toimesta pidätetyksi. Samoin toinen lentäjistä tuli pidätetyksi metsästä. Lisäksi koneen mukana paloi 2 miestä.
From the war diary of the III AKE (SPK 4290): "Lieutenant and Junior lieutenant, having bailed out from a shot down plane, were arrested at Vuottaa. They were sent to the [3rd] Army Corps with Captain Hakola. [...] Prisoner intelligence: The two flying officers detained at Vuottaa (Lieutenant and Junior lieutenant) belong to the 315 BAP (113 BAD). Other regiments in the division are 55 and 836 BAP. The division arrived from Smolensk to Shivorina [Siversky] Aerodrome (south of Gatchina). There are 30 IL-4s in the 315 BAP. The regiment's mission today was to bomb the artillery positions and bunkers at the front line as a part of the preparations of a general offensive starting today, the prisoner thought".
Vuottaalla pidätettiin pudotetusta koneesta laskuvarjolla pelastautuneet luutnantti ja aliluutnantti, jotka lähetetään AK:aan kapt. Hakolan mukana. [...] Vankitietoja: Vuottaalla pidätetyt kaksi vih.lentäjäupseeria (luutn. ja aliluutn.) kuuluvat LeR 315:iin (113.LeD.) Tähän le.div. kuuluu lisäksi Le.R 55 ja Le.R 836. Div. saapunut 6.6.1944 Smolenskista Shivorinan kentälle (Hatshinasta etelään). Le.R 315:n kalusto 30/IL-4. Rykm. tämän päivän pommitustehtävänä ollut etulinjan tyk.asemien ja bunkkerien pommitus, vangin arvelun mukaan Kannaselle suoritettavan yleishyökkäyksen valmisteluna, jonka piti tänään alkaa.

Hi everybody!

I proceed writing about the Continuation war in Karelian Isthmus and now start investigating details about VT-line breakthrough. There are too many white blanks in that history......
So I would be interested in getting any materials, which were not published earlier, connected to that theme. The area - IV AK sector, time range - 15-18.06.1944.
As usual I am interested in records of interrogation of captured on those days russian pilots but also I would be very pleased if somebody help me with other materials. For examle: memories of finnish soldiers, records of interrogation of captured russian soldiers and officers, any captured russian documents (maps, reports, etc.)
I studied diginarc.fi (may be not so professionally), "Kansa taisteli" and some more veterans magazines but it's not enough. To be more exact I would say that I need more info about Rv.Pr, JR 53, JR 48, JR 11, JR 58, JR 1, 3.PR, Ps.D and their arty groups (Vammelsuu, Vanhasaha, Sahakylä, Mustamäki, Kuuterselkä, Kotselkä, Kivennapa, Metsäkylä, Ino, Mesterjärvi, Vammeljärvi, Usikirkko, Liikola, etc.)
I am not sure this is a question for the actual topic. May be I need open a new one?

The total number of captured Soviet pilots in The Continuation war is apparently approx. 200, of which some 20 were more or less forcibly (or voluntarily) sent to Germany, and at least four turned later up in the so called Vlasov's air force (VVS KONR). I am this week travelling in southern Poland, and not able to give a more exact answer.

The list of captured VVS/VPO pilots were almost totally (in Karelian Isthmus) on ranks of 13th Air Army. Didn't find a single pilot of VVS-KBF. Number 147 on list: guards ltn. Galanin Nikolaj Jakovlevitsh of 103 GvIAP flying Airacobra was - i guess so - the only pilot of PVO.

The lists of 175 POW Soviet pilots 1941-44 in the book published by the Finnish Natinal Archive in 2008 (referred to by Juha Tompuri above) was compiled over ten years ago. I have since then continued my research, and my conclusion is that the correct number is approx. 200 POW pilots.

List of C F Geust.

Andy idea of that Hiitola Pe-2 case? Was the Pe-2 lost in 19 June 44 because there's another case two days earlier and crew member of same unit:

Husainov Rem Kalimovitsh . 34 GBAP Pe-2 17.6.44 Hiitola. (Хийтола)
