Re: Painting
What does it mean if there are crossed rifles and the Finnish lion underneath on the shoulder?

When used in uniform shoulder boards:Moparman wrote:What does it mean if there are crossed rifles and the Finnish lion underneath on the shoulder?
Crossed rifles = unit type uniform insignia for infantry.
Finnish lion = uniform insignia worn by officers in their shoulder boards.

The were two kind of officers. Reserve officers were trained at the Reserve Officer School in Niinisalo during the war. Cadre or professional officers were additionally trained at the Cadet School in Helsinki and Santahamina. 15 693 reserve officers were trained during 1939-45, the number of professional officers is of course much lower.Moparman wrote:The painting on Infantri officer is made 1942 . What does cadre mean? I am thinking like this , these are young boys , maby 20-25 years old. In my opinion they are educated officers on the military academy in Helsingfors? I think I will start my search there. How many officers did go that school between 39-44?

You can get a list from the database below, it has 9693 names of soldiers who died in 1942. I think it is possible that the painting was made from a photo even if they were alive. They probably had better things to do during furlough than sitting as a model.
