Translation help

Post by Rene385273 » 27 Sep 2017 21:38

Hi Guys,

I need help. Can someone read the blurred letters? Sadly it is the best provided picture I got.
It is written in the bottom of a trench art. Besides this, elsewhere is written the word: 'Kannas' and year '1942'.

Thank you
Kiitos

/ René

You`re sure it´s "Kannas" and not "Kaunas"? Kannas is the Latvian name of Cannes (France).

Hi History1, and thank you for replying to this thread. Nonetheless it has nothing to do with Kaunas nor Cannes in France.
It is a Finnish relic and Kannas simply means "isthmus" or "näset" (swedish) which refers to a geographical area during the Finnish wars.

No one else volunteered, so here you are:
1) here time 12.30, 13.40 and 16.00:
12/12Pr war diary
12.30hrs: Enemy a/c were flying, bringing food to their troops, as it was found later. Later another squadron brought food.
While the first squadron was bringing food our securing patrols found that the enemy was situated in the terrain South of the small lake at X=56,00 Y=90,00. Report on this was sent to the Battalion CO.
13.40hrs: Contact was made with the enemy that was collecting the food dropped by the a/c. Enemy losses 3 KIA. No casualties for us.
16.00hrs: Coy CO issued orders to withdraw to South because the enemy was in the process of surrounding the Coy from every quarter, some of them were already in the rear.
The CO considered that the withdrawal was inevitable also for the reason that there was no contact with our own troops over radio.
The first to withdraw was the I Platoon, with them the Coy CO, the radio squad and part of the medic squad.

The rest later.

2) time 9.15 and 13.15:
Entry 15.8.42:
09.15hrs: Arrived at the hill 148.8 (ref. Map P.36-19) where smouldering enemy campfires were found and a shot enemy, shot by his own. Here Capt. Segerstråle managed to make contact.
09.30hrs: Report was sent by radio to the Btn CO. He issued orders to follow the enemy without stopping and attack them with full force. This order was for every outfit.
12.00hrs: Arrived at pt x=55.00- y:04. Where we stopped and sent recon to the front where they found that the enemy had bivouacked about 0,5km East of the spot (where the Finn. Outfit found themselves, tr,rem)
13.00hrs: Coy CO issued orders to group for attack. Our Coy shall advance on the extreme left wing, flanking on the left to a lake touching it. I – II and III Platoons to the front line, IV Platoon securing the rear.
13.15hrs: Jumpoff. After advancing some half a km the enemy was engaged. After an firefight lasting one hour this hill occupied by the enemy was taken by assault.
The enemy left behind on the battlefield more than ten KIA including one woman. No casualties for our Coy. The pursuit of the enemy was continued along the side of the lake to SE, our company still on the extreme left wing, grouped in a line. At pt. X=52,50- Y=05 there was a stop for contact with our own troops. A patrol led by Cpl. Keränen was sent out to the isthmus between lakes about 1km from us. Their task was to find out if the enemy has crossed the path across this isthmus and if there may be own troops there.

More later.

3.
Entry 18.8.42:
0.45hrs: Enemy attack started against our positions in the front. The attack was beaten back and it was not necessary to use reserves.
Due to the enemy attack, however, Maj. Pyörämies ordered that the attack timed to start at 03.00hrs would not start until by a new order.
04.00hrs: Order from Maj. Pyörämies: The attack is to begin not until 06.00hrs. Grouping according to the previous order.
05.00hrs: Coy CO issued an order: The Coy shall set out at 05.30hrs and is to be grouped and ready in position to attack at 06.00hrs.
Grouping was carried out so that I Platoon was to be the leading platoon liaisin with Lt. Vierimaa's Coy. The other Platoons in order to the right. Contact with 2nd Lt. Sormunen's Coy. Advancing formation: line. Admin and medic squads behind III Platoon.
Immediately after grouping we set out. During advancing 5 enemies were encountered, 2 of which were taken POW. Of the prisoners one was handed over to Lt. Vepsäläinen and the other one to 2nd Lt. Iittinen.
10.45hrs The target was reached and it was found that the enemy had crossed the lake using rafts.

More later.

Entry 29.7.1942:

01.00hrs 2nd Lt Kallio's patrol reported having returned from the fishermen's hut x=88 y=98. They had found that the hut was empty and they had not found any traces of the enemy.
04.05hrs Report from Btn: Airmen have spotted enemy campfires in terrain 220, b. To be prepared to move on. At the field stronghold one guide is left behind to guide the mail and men carrying telephone cable coils on to the Coy and guide the 11th Coy to the fishermen's hut.
07.28hrs It was set out, target the fishermen's hut in terrain x=98 y=91.
07.0hrs A patrol led by Sr.Sgt. Kellanen was sent to the terrain at 220,6.
08.08hrs A 14 man patrol led by 2nd Lt. Lagersted (escorts of the sick men of the 11th Coy) was sent out to the terrain at 240,5. This patrol did not return to join our Coy but joined their own Coy at the fishermen's hut because we had established contact with the enemy.
10.30hrs We had reached the target at the fishermen's hut. Pack horses had problems in following the Coy because the terrain was at places soft and at other places sinking bog. By fixing duckboards and bridges we finally made it to the target. No telephone connection was available at once because only 2 km of cable was missing, but more of it was just being brought to the target, radio station was working intermittently.
11.40hrs A patrol led by Cpl. Keränen was sent out to the river at x=94 y=85 in the terrain to check if the enemy may have crossed the river using the duckboards at this location.
11.45hrs Capt. Segerstråhle (10th Coy) reporting: Enemy contacted in terrain at 222,6.
15.00hrs We set out for terrain at x=97 y=87. The Coy proceeded in an open line, order: Admin squad, platoons I – II – III and IV, the last ones were the MG platoon and the mortar platoon, securing the rear. Due to the difficult aspect of the terrain the pack horses after 5km had to be returned to the Fishermen's hut and transport the heavy weapons by men. Included were 2 machine guns and one mortar plus 60 rounds.
16.45hrs We found ourselves in the target x=97 y=87. Securing was posted 4km wide to ESE. The men were soaking wet due to heavy rainfall.
23.05hrs Report from Sgt. Savikurki's patrol from terrain at x=94 y=96 (ref. Appx no.8)
