Finnish Army Corps in 1941

Post by Panssari Salama » 10 May 2018 14:47

Following the discussion on evolution of VII Army Corps, I thought I'd try to map the various Army Corps as how they evolved monthly during 1941.

Easier said than done, as I found out. Here's the first sketch, with quite a few open eras and missing divisions, and some guess work, too.

Let us try to fill the gaps, shall we, would be interesting to see the full evolution of each Army Group during the attacking phase of early Continuation War.

Thank you Mikko, that is a very comprehensive listing! Just to note again, my timeline above is just a sketch, based on a reading of Sodan taisteluja 2: Jatkosota, mostly. There are gaps and guess work there.

Thank you J-P, good catch! That is indeed a typo that I then copied everywhere. General HQ Reserve in June was indeed 19. Division, while the division fighting at Hanko was of course the 17.D.

Another typo, but I can no longer fix it: July 1941 II Army Corps should say

II Army Corps
- 15. Division
- 18. Division

I can't edit the opening post anymore, and instead of text format I believe this little exercise is easier done with Excel rows and columns. i will post a picture of it over the weekend.

Edit: And here we go: something like this. It was not always easy to find out where each of the divisions was at certain time. Also, while the front line stabilised towards the end of the year, there's not much information in the couple of books I've looked into.

There's always the divisional war diaries to look at, but at this stage I am content this - for the most part - is how each division was detached at a monthly basis.

I am sure there are omissions, and I am happy to corrent any errata here.

Note that the above is not the final word, but the results of a couple of evenings browsing through. A starting point at least, I hope!
