Post by Edward L. Hsiao » 03 Jun 2019 20:05

Did the Finnish Army use observation balloons during the Continuation War from 1941 to 1944?

Finnish Defence Forces used observation balloons until Tähystyspallokomppania ("Observation Balloon Company") was disbanded in 1923. The company used ex-German WWI observation balloons at Santahamina military base outside Helsinki (see photograph below). Several Soviet barrage balloons (and British Operation Outward balloons) were captured during the Winter and Continuation War, but these were not used operationally. They were cut down and fabric was utilised as e.g. dust covers for Finnish aeroplane tailwheel mechanisms.

So I guess the Finnish armed forces really never had any use for balloons for observation purpose during the Winter War and the Continuation War.
