Karesuando/Karesiando Question

Post by krimsonglass51 » 22 Mar 2022 01:37

In the lagebuch of the second part of volume 4 of the Kriegstagebuch des OKW 1940 -1945, the withdrawal of AOK 20 is detailed day by day in 1945. In it, the retreat through "Karesuando" and "Karesiando" are mentioned.

For example:
Das Absetzen aus der Karesuando=Stellung hat begonnen. Der Alta=Fjord
soll voraussichtlich noch bis Ende Januar gehalten werden; der Feind ist weit
ostwärts stehengeblieben.
Artl.=Feuer in der Karesiando=Stellung, wobei 10 Granaten auf schwedischen
Boden fielen (es handelt sich um die 1 1 . finn.=Div.).
I'm assuming they mean Karesuvanto, the Finnish village near the Lyngen Stellung and the Swedish border. If that is the case, why do they use the Swedish spelling (and whatever Karesiando is derived from) instead of the Finnish spelling?

The best maps Finns and the Germans had at the time were 1:100 000 maps partially made of Swedish material and printed in Swedish. Käsivarsi region would not be properly mapped in 1:50 000 or 1:20 000 scale until the 1960s and 1970s.

So the Germans were using Swedish made maps then? That makes sense. I knew they weren't retreating from a town in neutral Sweden, but I wanted to be sure. Do you happen to know they got "Karesiando"?

"Karesiando" is probably a typing mistake, because U and I are near each other in a typewriter. This document seems to have both versions.

The origin of the word is maybe in the Finnish spoken in the Torne River valley.
