Location?
Hi,
I talked with friend, he showed couple pics of his GrandDad, Terho Pönkä.
We talked about him... where is this pic taken? (And When)
As seen in pics, he is a private in Finnish army.
Pic is most likely taken in Viipuri / Vyborg, summer 1944? Can anyone confirm that, can you recognize that building behind?
According info, I have, Terho was born Nov. 1926, so in pic he is 17y?
Ps. What is the rifle he has?

Re: Location?
Virtual Viipuri (https://virtuaaliviipuri.fi/en) would be good site to start searching for buildings in that city. Many vintage photos and modeled buildings there.
If I see correctly the building at left has no roof. It may have been damaged in Winter war or early Continuation war. There seems to be some kind of wall in front of the buildings. Perhaps it would be easier to locate.

Re: Location?
The rifle is either infantry rifle M/91 or M/91-24. From those two M/91 is more likely, since it was far more common. The only visible differences between the two rifle models are so small, that they are typically impossible to spot from period photos even when the photo has much higher resolution and rifle is in focus. It looks like rifle's bolt might be cocked and safety on. Uniform appears to be typical Finnish Army military uniform m/36 with summer cap m/39.Leibstandarte_fi wrote: ↑07 Apr 2022, 13:41I think I got the Rifle?

Re: Location?
Such a wooden wall goes around the Central Barracks, the picture could have been taken from the inside.

I think the bench is wooden, but as far I can see, the wall is stone/ beton?kuuskajaskari wrote: ↑08 Apr 2022, 09:02Such a wooden wall goes around the Central Barracks, the picture could have been taken from the inside.
