Grandfathers photoalbum: Need help in recognocing locations

#1

Post by Mrks » 26 Aug 2003, 20:58

I got hold of my grandfathers warphotoalbum. There is about 150 photos and some can be found here: http://koti.welho.com/mtallqvi/Ukin%20albumi/ The pictures are taken from 1942-1944

My grandfather was a combat courier(?) (TST-lähetti). I need some help indentifying some locations in the pictures:

A Russian church

same church from distance

These might be from Äänislinna/Petroskoi:

This one may also be from Äänislinna/Petroskoi. Can anyone translate the tekst?

And then a dam

If anyone can recognise these places it would be very helpful. I am putting together a frame with these war pictures on my wall and would like to put some marking on it.

Hi Mrks,

Can´t give you the complete answer, but the two first (Svir monastery) and two last pics are from Podporoze/Syvärin Kaupunki by river Svir.
The howitzer at the picture is a Finnish (originally Japanese) 150mm, 150 H 14 J. At Äänislinna/Petroskoi as you mentioned. The howitzer was placed there to replace the original Lenin statue.

Regards, Juha

P.S. good pics

Could this be the same tribune?.

It's from Äänislinna and caption says that its made of pulp and plywood.

Cheers/Juha

Yes looks like it. In my picture, the portraits of Stalin and Lenin and the soviet crest seem to be stripped which sounds logical.

Thanks for both Juha's for Your answers.

Maybe it was a printing house.

Hi there,

heh, it looks like they are from the same regiment, grandfather of my wife and your grandfather. Is your grandfather from JR 4?

there are quite many matching pictures.

The monument with a lady and children is in Karhymäki (at least the caption on the picture that I have says Rakkauspatsas Karhumäessä)

The dam is Svir river electric station, the church is most likely Valamo (Valaam) monastery.

Chack out more pictured from Tauno Kähönen's pictures archive

with best regards,

Bair

Hi Bair!

About the monastery pics I would still bet on the Svir/Syväri:

There are even same pictures under your link. Great pics blair. My pictures were't taken by my grandfather but by people he knew and were in the same outfit. He was in KTR 11.

More pics on the monastery and the last one is probably from the same location:

Hi there, Tauno Kahonen was in JR 4 and then in JR 45. There are quite many same pictures, indeed... he also has the picture of the medic in front of Viipuri castle tower.

Juha: I agree, I looked closer and realized that it could not be Valamo. It is indeed in Karelia as you have mentioned.

regadrs,

The same medic appears in many pictures in the almbum and I his name is written behind some of the pictures (I can't read the cause it so messy) so I think my granddad knew him and he was most likely in KTR 11.
