soviet union's occupation of Finland

Post by timoa » 24 May 2002 09:17

hi all,

Probably could find information from web also but it's nicer to post here:

Does anyone remember until which year SU forces were in Finland after the war? [Porkkala] And maybe also some more information about the topic.

<finnish>ps. Kuuntelin neuvostoliiton kansallislaulua tossa äsken ja ihmettelin vaan että minkä takia minulle on joskus opetettu sen sanat [80-luvulla] suomeksi ala-asteella.. pelottava ajatus. muistaako muut tällaista?</finnish>

1956. They left early because as a "gift of goodwill" when one of the treaties between Finland and SU was expiring (FCMA?). Not completely sure though.

Ja ei. Ikinä en oppinut kyseistä laulua. Löydettiin kyllä jostain laulukirjasta sanat kun ajankuluksi selailtiin. :D

Yep, 1956

<finnish>

<finnish>joo, totta. kyllähän niitä kaikkia laulettiin :P eikä pelkästään NLää..

täällä oli näitä sanoja
http://www.funet.fi/pub/culture/russian/lyrics/political/

This is the old version before the year 1977

Neuvostoliiton valtiohymni
Oi suuri ja mahtava Neuvostoliitto
sun synnytti valtava Venäjänmaa
Sun luonut on kansojen yhteinen tahto,
sun mahtis on säilyvä aikojen taa.

Oi suuri, vapaa synnyinmaa,
sun kunniaasi kaiuttaa
kansojen ystävyys murtumaton.
Sun lippuasi seuraten
neuvostoihminen
voitosta voittohon astuva on.

Niin suuri on Lenin. Hän kirkasti tiemme,
kun aamuun me astuimme myrskyistä yön.
Ja Stalinin johdolla taistoissa, työssä
me kasvoimme kuntohon sankarityön.

Oi suuri, vapaa synnyinmaa,
sun kunniaasi kaiuttaa
kansojen ystävyys murtumaton.
Sun lippuasi seuraten
neuvostoihminen
voitosta voittohon astuva on.

Me taistellen nostimme armeijan maasta,
kuin myrsky me käymme päin valloittajaa.
Nyt iskemme puolesta lastemme lasten
ja eestä sun kunnias, neuvostomaa.

Oi suuri, vapaa synnyinmaa,
sun kunniaasi kaiuttaa
kansojen ystävyys murtumaton.
Sun lippuasi seuraten
neuvostoihminen
voitosta voittohon astuva on.

Löytyisköhän joltain Jääkärien Marssia wavina tms?

[siis: "on iskumme syvä viha voittamatooon.. jne]

We did wonder why we did study Soviet Union´s national anthem on school in 1980s. But we did also study other national anthems too (USA, Britain and France).
That was main thing in our discussion.

It´s good to know how to sing most likely new master´s national anthem (SU or USA, and other anthems are too good to know.)

When Porkkala was handed over to the Russians, Finns put small garrison in Espoo as a borderguard. And after 1956 that garrison was converted to research facility, purpose was mainly to develop radars, although there was small number of ordinary conscripts. In 1998 area was sold to the city of Espoo and most of the equipment was transferred to Riihimäki, where its main function is to develop electronic warfare.
There were also few homes for families. I know the area quite well… I lived there some time...

Finns took it back in Paris 1947 (or actually it was took back already in 1941, after Soviet abandoned it and Finnish-Swedish troops marched to in). Porkkala was much more closer Helsinki than Hanko was (only about 15 km, Artillery guns could reach Helsinki), and Porkkala was also good place to control ship movements in Gulf of Finland.

Thanks Antti V in regards to Hanko, but is Porkkala a Russian outpost, even now?

No, Russians did give it back in 1956, as you can see from this same topic. And reason is also mentioned.
