Re: The official AHF Winter & Continuation War quiz thread
Pilot Officer (Vänrikki) Nyholm was the one who broke his Me 109-G2 in landing to Rusin airport, near Prague. The airfield had good tarnac coated runway, but had semicircle lamps attached in the middle of it for night operation purposes. Nyholm obviously didn't notice them, but landed to them breaking his plane so badly that it had to be left there for repairs.
Now half of my question is resolved. 13 Messerscmitts out of 14 landed in Helsinki, but other easier repairable technical problems and accidents also appeared.
Guessing may be a recommended solution. Only one figure is needed...
With best,
J-P

Re: The official AHF Winter & Continuation War quiz thread
Updating my question to this new page:
How many of the 14 of the second patch managed to make their way from Bavaria to Helsinki unharmed and how many landed in Malmi together (on the same day)?
Harmed in this case means technical failures and accidents.
And a hint:
Another incident accured in Riga when Luutnatti (Flying Officer) Tervo rolled his Messerschmitt on a JU-88, prepairing for a take-off at side of the Airfield thus breaking its wingtip.
The Finns had to listen repeated “Donnerwettern” from the mouth of non else than a German Nachtjagd Gruppenkommandant. The JU-88 happened to be his own brand new plane!
With best,
J-P

Re: The official AHF Winter & Continuation War quiz thread
My question seem to be more difficult than I'd thought. Well, another hint:
This pick-up squad was of course from the Häv.Le.L 34.
The detachment landed to Malmi on 16th May 1944 and to Utti on the next day.
How many planes made it straight to Finland?

Re: The official AHF Winter & Continuation War quiz thread
Two of the Messerscmitts stayed in Malmi for 1./ Le.L 34 namely DL+IE and IU+XY.
After these latest hints my question can be solved even under narc-osis.

Re: The official AHF Winter & Continuation War quiz thread
I give up. The right answer is 12 planes out of 14 delivered.
Tervo got a new propeller to his plane, and was able to fly home with the 11 other Messerscmitts. But FO Ami Euramo's plane had an engine failure, so his plane had to be left in Jesau airfield for new engine.
Euramo flew onboard “Hanssin-Jukka” to Riga. There he got information that his plane was ready to be collected, so he took a train from Riga back to Jesau. He flew home later.
Me-109 G2s landing to Helsinki-Malmi: http://digi.narc.fi/digi/view.ka?kuid=2913182
Story of the trip:
Jukka Piipponen, Hyökkäys auringosta. Ritari Eino Luukkasen elämä. Koala-Kustannus 2012.
It seems that everyone have run out of questions, because nobody bothered even to try answering.
The quiz is open for someone brave enough to send a new question!

Thanks for the question J-P, but at least for me it was a bit complicated, and would have demanded some "research" to which I didn't have extra time.

Re: The official AHF Winter & Continuation War quiz thread
I thought that narcotics hint with the date and unit would have made it easy!
I must admit that I have a foult of making my questions a way too complicated. Have to try to improve them.

Dear Juha Tompuri,
I am a post doc researcher at the University of Turku (here my phd dissertation on Italian volunteers in the Waffen-SS: http://www.academia.edu/2099177/I_volon ... oria_orale). My professor, Luigi G. de Anna would like to talk with you about the Manzocchi case (the Italian aviator in Finland). Could you contact me (I am a new user and I cannot write you a message here)? I would like to put you and professor de Anna in contact. Kiitos Nicola Guerra

After id'ing the Berezin UB, the rest is easy.
http://www.virtualpilots.fi/hist/WW2His ... inoEnglish.Morane and her weapons, gunsight problems and about air-to air shooting skill
What was it like to fly the Morane (Morane-Saulnier 406) after flying the Fokker? What was it like as a plane?
It was a jolly good plane. It was agile, the only fault was the miserably weak engine. She could not climb fast enough in an emergency, that was the problem. The armament could also have been better. The rat guns were miserably weak and the mags were of small capacity, it was not much good for anything. But the Berezina heavy machine gun was good. There have been complaints that it did not want to work but mine fired every time! I never wanted to blame it.
The Hispano cannon has been complained about, can you comment on that?
We only had the 12,7mm Berezina.
It has been said about the Berezina that it used to have mechanical problems, it was not strong enough? But when it was working, it was a very good gun?
The main problem, I think, was that our engineers began to tinker with it. The gun had a forced feed system, as far as I remember, which was removed. Anyway the gun was modified and then problems started emerging. But I don't know for sure... In my opinion the gun used to work well enough.
Over to you Markus.
Regards, Juha

Thanks Juha,
