While the Soviet resistance was fierce and the regiment suffered heavily, the less-than-endearing name doesn't refer to anything the Soviets did.

Well... high casualties may have contributed, but were not the reason (at least according to my sources which I trust are more credible than this web-page).

Another hint: the reason was not scatological but criminal.

Hi TTT (Tero T from Toronto),

The rules of this quiz are found at th first page of this "quiz section" http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 91&start=0.
Your question was so interesting and about such an interesting person, that I have to have this try:

Colonel / Captain Hubert Fauntleroy Julian aka "Black Eagle", a Winter War volunteer to Finnish AF ?

You are correct. And it should be pointed out that as some people try to paint Finland as Nazi Sympathizers during WWII , small examples like this show than Finland was not part of the master race ideology of Germany. I opted to throw in this at this time as I was unclear if there was a question posed. Tero T

Hmmmm....... A guess... Could it be so that the encirkeled unit was set up by convicts and that they had not had the opportunity to wash their clothes/themselves and was very dirty, and hence the name...?

No.

One Finnish soldier committed a crime that made one grunt comment "What a shitty place this is when people are...".

What did the soldier do?

Well, it was about shooting, but not POWs.
