Finnish documents

Post by Henric Edwards » 28 Mar 2002 02:04

Does anyone know if it is possible to order copies of documents from the Finnish army? Not just personal files, but archived material regarding units and such, like from the German BA-MA? If so, where and what sort of documents can I expect to find?

Yes and yes.
If you don't have the specific info about what document you want copies of you'll have to visit the Sota-arkisto and go manually browse through the stuff. It's all there, war-diary's, orders, anything.
They have some archive-registers on their website, http://www.sota-arkisto.fi maybe they can help you.

Thanks you Andreas! I've been in contact with them before when I ordered the copies of my grandfathers papers. I didn't realize that they also had the other documents. :)

Yep, those unit papers are very useful if you are looking for info what person did during war or during his training era. There is also, for example, books of punishments, unit diaries, payday notes, some copies of holiday permissions and requests for holiday by sodiers etc. etc.
