Executed Mauthausen personnel

#1

Post by Leo Angel » 10 Apr 2009, 21:24

Hello!
I've recently saw in the book "Spaniards in the Holocaust: Mauthausen, the Horror on the Danube" by David Wingeate Pike very interesting statement: "... it came to pass that of the 15 000 SS of Mauthausen who murdered up to 200 000 prisoners in the most ignominious of ways, fewer than 200 paid for it with theit lives". Here is the link to the book: http://books.google.com/books?id=LiHL91 ... utput=html So I've made a little research and prepared a list of Mauthausen personnel tried by Allies and executed after war. Here it is, so far I've found only 87 names:

87. Adolf Zutter SS-Hauptsturmführer (sentenced to death by American Military Tribunal in Dachau, case: US vs Johann Altfuldisch et al., executed on 27 May 1947)

So I've also included kapos sentenced to death and executed by the Allies after war. Still the number is far less than 200 (96):
88. Rudolf Fiegl kapo (sentenced to death by American Military Tribunal in Dachau, case: US vs Johann Altfuldisch et al., executed on 27 May 1947)
89. Quirin Flaucher kapo (sentenced to death by American Military Tribunal in Dachau, case: US vs Franz Kofler et al., executed on 19 November 1948)
90. Karl Fleischer kapo (sentenced to death by American Military Tribunal in Dachau, case: US vs Karl Fleischer, executed on 12 November 1948)
95. Anton Klein kapo (sentenced to death by American Military Tribunal in Dachau, case: US vs Anton Klein, executed on 5 November 1948)
96. Karl Schrögler kapo (sentenced to death by American Military Tribunal in Dachau, case: US vs Karl Horcicka et al., executed on 2 February 1949)

I didn't include Hartheim Castle personnel executed, but even if I counted them it would still be 98:
97. Vincenz Nohel (sentenced to death by American Military Tribunal in Dachau, case: US vs Johann Altfuldisch et al., executed on 27 May 1947)
98. Josef Storwasser (sentenced to death by Czechoslovakian Court, executed on 30 September 1948)

Even if we literally take Pike's "paid with their lives" words and include personnel who has committed suicide or was killed during the attemption of escape we reach number 102:
99. Georg Bachmayer SS-Hauptsturmführer (committed suicide on 8 May 1945)
100. Albert Sauer SS-Sturmbannführer (killed on 3 May 1945)
101. Fritz Seidler SS-Hauptsturmführer (committed suicide on 3 May 1945)
102. Franz Ziereis SS-Standartenführer (died from wounds on 24 May 1945)

It's still far away from number of 200 SS-men who paid with their lives for crimes committed in Mauthausen concentration camp complex. Can anybody would be able to add any additional info to this list?

Cheers

I am wondering about Karl Wittig...

This document describes him as an inmate of KL Mauthausen, in 01.1947 he still gave testemonies
https://www.archives.gov/files/publicat ... rip115.pdf

The testemony itself sounds more as given from a KL-inmate

My source was for Wittig:

http://www.edwardvictor.com/Holocaust/m ... p_main.htm

"... Below are thumbnails of an original copy of statement in German given to American authorities by Karl Wittig, a subcommander at Mauthausen, after the liberation of the camp. He was ultimately hanged at the camp. Please click on the thumbnail to see the full image, and then click your back key or "Affidavit 4" in the left frame to return...."

I know this link. But I wondered if "he was ultimately hanged at the camp" why he should give such a documented testimonial about procedures in KL Sachsenhausen.

A confirmation that Karl Wittig was an inmate of KL Sachenhausen (and KL Flossenbürg, KL Mauthausen - 2nd source) see

Larry,
In my opinion it is SS-Sturmbannführer August Hirt in your picture. I have strong doubts that it might be Grahn.

August Bogusch and Josef Leipold were sentenced and executed in Poland but for the crimes committed in other camps not in KL Mauthausen (Bogusch in Auschwitz and Leipold in Budzyń, subcamp of Majdanek). Only Emil Euler was sentenced and executed in Poland for the crimes committed indeed in KL Mauthausen.

What exactly is a subcommander at Mauthausen?
I never read or heared that anyone was hanged at Mauthausen after the liberation.

Hi Michal,

Thanks for your reply. However I have to disagree with your view that it may be August Hirt. The eyes are very similar but that is where the similarity ends. Note the two faces side by side. Hirt has scars on the right corner of his mouth, under bottom lip and on chin and several under his nose. Grahn does not. Grahn has a dimple on the end of his nose, on his chin and a distinctive crease running from the left side of his mouth, down and across his chin. Hirt does not have these features.

The back of the photo has a hand-written dedication to a colleague which is dated Berlin 27-9-40 and signed by Grahn.

Cheers,
Larry

I don't believe he was a Kapo in Dachau - that's what I have:

1932-1934 KPD-Member
1935-1938 Wehrmacht

1938 inmate in KL Dachau
1939 sent to KL Mauthausen
1941 Kapo (Steinbruch) in KL Gusen I
1944 Lagerältester in KL Gusen II

13.12.1945 pardon refused, this is probably not the execution date

In my opinion it is SS-Sturmbannführer August Hirt in your picture. I have strong doubts that it might be Grahn.

Cheers,
Larry
Hi Larry,
my mistake. I was not aware of the dedication on the photo. Thanks for sharing. I`ve never seen Grahn in his SS uniform.

Hi Michal,

No worries, he looks like Hirt until you compare photos closeup.
I posted some info on him over at HWM Forum some time ago and have copied it here:

The 1 Dec. 1938 SS-Dienstaltersliste has only one Werner Grahn. The registered data is:

Name: Grahn, Werner
Date of birth: 5 Jan. 1884
SS-No.: 280 102
NSDAP-No.: 5 499 950
Promotion date: Untersturmführer on 9 Nov. 1938
Duty assignment: SD-Hauptamt
Awards and decorations: 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class, 1914/18 Honor Cross for Combatants, unspecified Landesorden
Other data: Not a holder of the German Sports Badge or SA Sports Badge (exempt from having to qualify due to being over 50 years of age), not a holder of the SS Honor Ring or Honor Sword, not a member of Lebensborn e.V.
More information about Grahn
