Is this really true? Any other sources of this, except Anthony Beevor?
And yes, I've seen in one of the topics here the book named "Woman in Berlin" by unknown female journalist of that time, which also told about rapes in Berlin area. Any other?

Many Russian troops thought rape was a reward to the victors. Losing side won't get their voice heard.

I think it has been discussed here that the source which Beevor used also estimates many hundreds of thousands (maybe some millions) Soviet women were raped by the Germans. Can anybody recall which thread was that?

The Swedish Author Niclas Sennerteg published in 2002, prior to beevors Berlin The downfall the book "Stalins Hämnd" I don't know whether it was translated into other languages other than the scandinavian. He too mentions these rapings. He quotes a number of interviews he conducted in the period between 1994 and 1999 with survivors. One of the women raped was one Sibylle Larsson (Born Krahmer) she said (all the quotes are my translation, so bear with me): "all in all was I raped 8 times during the six months I was living under Soviet occupation, not even being pregnant protected me from rape" (Sennerteg p. 152, note: 260: Authors Interview with Sibylle Larsson )


Ella Schröder recalls that her mother "was raped in the presence of my at the time 12 year old sister. Me and my sister jumped out the window and fled through the garden across the fields into the woods 300 meters away. The russians fired at us, but luckily they didn't hit us. In Annafeld most of the women was raped. Many spent days and nights hiding in the cemeteries. No one dared venture home anymore as it was well known that the russians had found alot of alcohol that the germans had left behind, and were staggering about senselessly intoxicated." (Sennerteg p. 153 note: 262: Bundesarchiv, Vertreibung und Vertreibungsverbrechen 1945-1948. Bonn 1989)

The surgeon Arnold Niedenzu from the small hamlet of Rössel in eastern prussia gave the following testimony of the soviet occupation:

"already after a few days a woman who was in labour was brought in with a serious gunshot wound to her lung.
As a russian wanted to rape her, I pointed out to him that she was close to giving birth. He then kicked her in the stomach and shot her in the stomach. [...] The rapings went beyond all imaginable proportions. According to my calculations I am quite confident in claiming that just two percent of the women aged between 50 and 15 was raped."

Niedenzu went to the Soviet authorities, but when he complained to the GPU the interpreter replied "at first raping was allowed, so as you can imagine it is quite hard to put an end to it now" (Sennertegn p. 153, n : 263 Bundesarchiv, Bayreuth: Ostdokumentation 2)

Ostdok also gives the following statement from Hedwig Goldbach of Elbing:

"Neither Women nor children were spared. Two elder women in their 70's from Bismarckstrasse poisened themselves after being raped. Also the 12 year old daughter of baker Radau in Königsberger Strasse was raped. Frau Anna Richter, Neuegutstrasse told me that appox. 40 women in a large house situated in Mühldamn sliced their wrists after having experienced frightfull rapings. Probaly no woman nor girl was spared. A woman told me that her 17 year old daughter was raped by 17 bolsheviks. She eventually died from this brutal experience."

According to Statician Gerhard Reichling as many as 1,9 million german women was raped by the soviet troops. (Helke Sander and Barbara Johr: Befreier und Befriete p. 58)

According to US. wartime correspondents Alexander Wehrt a soviet Major explained the following to him:

"Our soldiers only needs to say "Frau komm" then they knew what was expected of them. Let us not kid ourselves. After 4 years The Red Army was quite "undernourished" in this manner.[...]
In Poland a few unfortunate incidents took place, but in regards to the women, the disciplin was maintained. Quite a lot of looting took place. Our boys are quite fond of wristwatches. But the pillaging and raping really took place as soon as we entered Germany. They were so sexually undernourished that they even assaulted old women at the age of 60, 70 and even 80 years old - a not so pleasant experience for grandmothers. But I admit that it was a disgusting problem, and the cossacks and other asian soldiers' behaviour was especcially poor." (Alexaner Wehrt: Russia at war, New York 1964 - my translation)

I think it might be this source. What does it say about the Soviet women raped by the Germans?

PS: Sorry, but I'm skeptical about the rape of 70 or 80 year old women
