As people didn't have ids (they existed but weren't mandatory), and the the state bureaucracy was much smaller than today there was no need for standardized spelling of names and It happened sometimes that people, especially minorities used different spellings depending on the occasion and need.

Sometimes people (especially the Jews) used so different spellings that even the local postman had trouble identifying them.
So there wasn't anything unusual that the woman (presumably a German Pole) was Johanna working for the SS, and Joanna as a Polish citizen.

Edward Shutt, former high Gestapo official, responsible for the liquidation of the Chelm and Krasnik ghettos where some 10,000 Jews were murdered, has been sentenced to be hanged by a Lublin court (for participating in anti-Jewish persecutions in Falenitz, near Warsaw).

I've red that he was captured by AK during the Warsaw Uprising, recognized as the leader of big execution of civilians by the survivors of this execution in Mokotów District/Warsaw , sentenced to death by AK court and executed/shot.
