Re: Trials in Russia
Hello ansata,
I don't know if Hirsch was executed. What I know is that the data of Volksbund is often a bit insecure. For example
01.02.1946 can mean that it was exactly on Feb 1st, 1946 or just generally 'February 1946'.
In addition I've seen over time numerous cases of spelling mistakes, confused dates, double registrations and so on.
For POWs that disappeared during capitivity the death date is just the last date a witness saw/believed to have seen that person. It's sometimes a bit vague, but it's the only source we have.
According to other sources here in the forum the death sentences in the Velikije Luki trial were carried out the day after the verdict so probably 01.02.1946 is just when the families in Germany got the notification of the executions anyway.
Perhaps a witness returning home to Germany years later believed to have seen Hirsch still on January 27th, and so this date was entered. Or the handwriting on the original filecards was bad and Jan, 17th turned in Jan, 27th when it was entered into the database. I've seen all that before.
Hirsch is a possibility to be investigated but nothing definitve yet.
Best regards
Torsten

Re: Trials in Russia
Hello ansata, Refer to the post on Aug 14, 2009, regarding ColGen Enecke?????? This must be Erwin Akfred Jaenecke, 1890-1960. He was not executed, but kept as a POW until Oct 13, 1955. Source is "Die Generale des Heeres", vol. 6, and Keilig. Regards, Harry

Re: Trials in Russia
Wow after reading these posts, as well as others, it is apparent that the Allies captured, "tried" and executed quite a few Nazis--this is not well known. The American view is that only a handful of Germans were punished for the crimes of the Holocaust. It would appear that thousands of middle and lower ranking Nazis paid with their lives for their crimes.
