Opening the Russian Katyn-files

Post by Waleed Y. Majeed » 28 Apr 2010 10:17

Not sure it's the correct section for this bit of news but here goes...

President Medvedev (visiting Denmark) has ordered the archives in Moscow
to open the Katyn-files for the public.

Thanks, Waleed Y. Majeed. Since we have a number of open threads on this subject, I'll merge this post into one of them after a day or so. "Katyn Massacre Documents" at http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=79170 looks good, since there's a current discussion going on there.

Some idiot from Reuters:
Russia published for the first time on Wednesday documents relating to a Soviet massacre of thousands of Polish officers, in a gesture of solidarity with Warsaw following the death of its president.
Why are such ignoramuses allowed in Reuters?

For readers who have had difficulty viewing the posted documents:
Within hours of the posting of the documents, nearly 700,000 Internet users tried to access the website, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported, citing a spokesman for the state archives. The website responded slowly throughout the day due to the heavy traffic.

Several posts were moved to the existing Germans executed for Katyn thread and others to the new Katyn Massacre was part of a joint Russian-German operation thread.

Just to remind everyone-these are old documents that were declassified by Yeltsin on 14th October 1992.
They were printed in scholarly publications in both Russia and Poland.
The only news really is that they are now available online.

The interesting documents-116 volumes out of 183 volumes of Katyn investigation in Russia-those documents remain classified.
