Re: Treblinka Perpetrators
Does anyone know if there is contemporary Nazi records detailing the death of Christian Wirth?
Such as records of units in Trieste, personnel records or anything?
I seem to recall seeing something that suggested he was death in documentations from the BDC regarding promotions for Aktion Reinhardt.

Re: Treblinka Perpetrators
Sorry, it is a very specific question I am interested in.
Is there a piece of German documentation that attests to his death and the manner of it?
Re: Treblinka Perpetrators
Hi;
We have three things (as far as I know) :
- Franz Stangl's claim to Gitta Sereny : 'I saw him dead... They said partisans killed him but we thought his own men had taken care of him'
- Wirth's death certificate : - And the handwritten field diary of the Yugoslav partisan leader who organized and carried out Wirth’s assassination (this diary, tracked down by M. Tregenza is, I believe, in a Lublin museum).

Re: Treblinka Perpetrators
I thought Wirth was a Sturmbannfuher but this says he was a Hauptsturmfuhrer I may have made a mistake though.

Re: Treblinka Perpetrators
No you didn't make a mistake; Wirth was promoted Stubaf on 20th january 1943. It seems like the RSHA just wasn't up to date at the time of his death.

Re: Treblinka Perpetrators
The sentencing of Kurt Franz at the Dusseldorf Trial in 1965
THE TONE OF THE KOMMANDANT: KURT FRANZ
By far the most notorious among the trial defendants was 50-year old cook and former Treblinka camp commander, Kurt Franz. In the introduction to its sentence, the Dusseldorf court observed that the number of people killed either by Franz himself or on his direct orders could no longer be established but in any case numbered a great many: “A large part of the streams of blood and tears which have been shed at Treblinka goes on his account”. His conduct at the camp testified of “such sadism and such a disdain for all Jewish life, that the human fantasy hardly suffices to imagine altogether the crimes committed by him in person or carried out under his command and with his cooperation”
The man thus characterized had, before coming to Treblinka, prepared meals in the ‘Euthanasia’ extermination centres of Grafeneck, Hartheim, Sonnenstein and Brandenburg as well as in the prestigious surroundings of the Fuhrer Chancellery’s kitchen. In the spring of 1942 he had been transferred to the Lublin office of SSPF Globocnik and from there assigned to guard duties in the extermination camp of Belzec. Several months later, Franz, now promoted to SS-Oberscharfuhrer, was sent to Treblinka where he was to discipline the Ukrainian guard units over whom the camp’s first commander, Dr Imfried Eberl, had lost control. Together with Aktion Reinhard chief of operations Christian Wirth, Franz also reorganized the entire Treblinka operational system which, under Eberl’s direction, had equally turned into a complete chaos. As a result of his active involvement, Franz soon advanced to the position of deputy of the newly appointed camp commander Franz Stangl. And, as Stangl hardly occupied himself with the daily camp routine, Franz practically took over control of it organization as well (after Stangl left Treblinka in August 1943, Franz became his successor). Thus, he supervised all that went on in Treblinka and actively participated himself at all levels of the ongoing extermination proceedings.
With the arrival of Jewish transports, he took care of security measures and ‘assisted’ in the unloading of the trains, the separation of the old, ill and feeble among the victims and the selection of able-bodied Jews for the camp’s work units. From the railway platform down to the gas chambers, Franz ‘accompanied’ the death candidates, generally terrorizing them into making greater haste with the use of his whip, his pistol or the vicious Treblinka camp dog ‘Barry’, whom he was in the habit of randomly setting on the helpless victims for personal pleasure.
As the court extensively illustrated by a great many witness’ testimonies of his former Treblinka victims as well as his co-defendants, the regime imposed by Franz at Treblinka on both the deportees and ‘work Jews’, was one of utter terror and sadism. In its sentence the court listed over 40 meticulously described examples of murders committed by Franz himself or with his active participation, ranging from random beatings and shootings of prisoners down to brutish killings of Jewish babies. That Franz particularly enjoyed his newly acquired and complete mastery over life and death at Treblinka, was also illustrated by the song he composed for the work Jews of the camp. The text of this so-called ‘Treblinka song’, which every member of the work force was compelled to learn by heart the very day of his arrival and sing upon command, runs as follows:
“Freely facing the world
The columns are marching off to work.
For us there is only Treblinka today
Which is our destiny.
We note the tone of the commandant’s voice
And follow upon his signal.
We go side-by-side together to all,
That duty requires from us.
Work is all that has meaning here
As well as obedience and duty,
Until one day we, too, may see
That glimpse of bliss beckoning us”
As far as his Dusseldorf judges were concerned there were no mitigating circumstances in the case of Franz. On the contrary, his performance in the Treblinka camp had clearly uncovered his “almost satanic brutality” as well as his “extraordinarily great criminal energy”, which pointed to his complete identification with the murderous intentions of his superiors. Thus, the court considered him guilty of the murder of “at least 300,000 persons”, as well as of additional murders in 35 cases and the attempted murder in one case. For this, Franz was given a total of 36 life sentences plus 8 years’ imprisonment.

Ginna Sereny`s book: Into That Darkness: from Mercy Killing to Mass Murder
Just bought it. Strong entry, but very fun to read. As usual, the guy wanted to "good", thought that it "because the Fuhrer told you," but it turned out as always ...
At 5 am doing the walk to the gas chambers to see if everything works ok ..
In Sobibor even brought the family vacation in the vicinity of the camp. His wife, however, she began to be interested in what he was doing, and then found out that he is on the board of the camp, but she did not think that he is the Commander ...
The author died in this year.
I recommend! After all, not everyone gets life in prison for complicity in the killing of 900 thousand. people. Franz Stangl.

Re: Treblinka Perpetrators
I agree Ponury, Sereny's book is essential for understanding the thinking of a (large) cog in the machine that was Aktion Reinhard, from one of its less severe minds.

Re: Treblinka Perpetrators
Or somewhere in the network are available records of the trial of Kurt Franz and Paul Stangl? I do not mean a dry summary and judgment, and the same testimony, questions to the defendants, the testimony of witnesses?
Re: Treblinka Perpetrators
Ponury,
The only way you will see any of the documentation you are seeking of the Franz Trial will be by visiting the Bundesarchiv Ludwigsburg. The wealth of material therein will never make the internet.
