Allied Control Commission-Alleged Finnish war criminals
Hi!
Just wanted to share this collection of transcripts describing the Sovjet (ACC) hunt for these 61 named Finnish war criminal suspects found in these documents that I have. It is interesting reading and tragic at the same time to read about the Finnish progress, while they are hunting down these men and reporting back to the ACC as the time goes by..
15 pages in Finnish.

Re: Allied Control Commission-the hunt for finnish war crimi
Does anyone have information about persons named in the documents and the fate of them after they where arrested by the finnish state police?

On at least one occasion the name is misspelt.
The reason for one person to show up on this list was that Russian POW tried to kill Finnish soldiers with a hand grenade after they surrender (I don't know if they succeed), as consequence of this, the Russians was shot.

IIRC this list was compiled by the Soviets based on information given by former Soviet POWs after their return to the USSR. Therefore it's no wonder that there are many mistakes in the names. First the Russian POWs rendered the Finnish names into Cyrillic Russian and then these names were backtranslated into Latin Finnish.

Truly. This problem is chronic in trying to identify war criminals, and its not just restricted to the Soviet Union. We encounter the problem fairly often here -- the latest example is at http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 4#p1574954
Anglo-American war crimes lists routinely omit or substitute other combinations for diacritical marks -- Göring becomes Goering, Höß becomes Hoess, Artukovic becomes Artukovitch, etc. Both the French and Germans have their own different spellings of slavic names, Polish war crimes lists use Polish versions of German names, and everybody seems to lapse into local spellings of Christian (first) names -- Carl or Karel for Karl, etc.
Ultimately, however, misspelled names do not mean that there's no war crime and no criminal.

Can we have some translations into English of essential bits of this document? The language on this forum is supposed to be English.
In fact, the whole question of Finnish war crimes during WWII desperately needs to be looked at in a cool and objective manner.

Re: Allied Control Commission-the hunt for finnish war crimi
There is no information in the documents about what the finnish named in the document are beeing accused of by the ACC. Its just a list of persons that ACC wants to have arrested as soon as possible. No futher information. The rest of the documents are progress-letters to the ACC from the Finnish government.
The finnish ahtorityes aren't able to identify nr 3,4,11,14,15,16,19,20,22,34,35,47,48,52,56,60 because the lack of information from ACC about these persons. The rest have been arrested except a few that are in Sweden (nr 6, 21, 10, 2). Nr 57 committed suicide. Nr 30 and 37 are dead (died in the war?)..
