Franz Suchomel died on Dec 18, 1979 according to Wikipedia. His date of death wasn't actually on there until recently.john h wrote:Thanks Carman anyone else know the whereabouts or deaths on any of the others thanks in advance
After his release he is best known for his interviews with Gitta Sereny for her book Into That Darkness (mainly centering on her interviews with Franz Stangl), and later he was secretly recorded for Lanzmann's film Shoah.
Suchomel was an interesting character. Esp when talking to Sereny he seemed to always speak admiringly of the Jews and he comes off rather sympathetically. He was certainly very honest and forthcoming. At the same time, he "encouraged" Jews along the tube to the gas chambers in Treblinka, and one of the survivors in Into That Darkness said that he would beat them. His most revolting moment was in Shoah -- he sings a song about Treblinka that they used to make the Jews sing -- then sort of quips "i guarantee you that there is no Jew alive today who knows that song". Strange person. I think he shows more than most people how being a perpetrator was its own sort of complex psychological process.

He was wrong though, wasn't he? What about Samuel Willenberg?Paul Lantos wrote:His most revolting moment was in Shoah -- he sings a song about Treblinka that they used to make the Jews sing -- then sort of quips "i guarantee you that there is no Jew alive today who knows that song".

Re: Operation Reinhard personal
Oh, of course he was wrong. At least 50 Jews survived Treblinka. Many of them wrote and testified about it. Suchomel must have known that, I mean this interview with Claude Lanzmann was in 1978 or 1979 -- there were memoirs about Treblinka by Jewish survivors at that point, and Suchomel had been tried and convicted at the Treblinka trial where survivors testified.Davey Boy wrote:He was wrong though, wasn't he? But that wasn't really my point. My points were 1) the sheer triviality and callousness of fondly singing that Treblinka jingle almost with nostalgia, and 2) of course almost no living Jews would know the song, I mean it was an extermination camp -- the whole point of its existence was that there should be no living Jews.
Here is the clip from Shoah. Lanzmann actually makes him sing it twice.

SS-Befehlsblatt 01.10.1943 shows temporary dismassal ofjohn h wrote: ↑05 Sep 2013 20:56BOLENDER, Heinz Kurt SS-Oberscharführer
21/05/1912 - 10/10/1966 (??/12(1965 BDC)))
BACKGROUND:
Born in Duisburg. "Burner" at Sonnenstein. Served at Brandenburg, Hartheim and Hadamar too. Member of NSDAP and SS.
SERVICE AT SOBIBOR:
Arrived on 22 April 1942 at Sobibor together with Stangl, Frenzel, Gomerski and others. He testified: "I was during my service in Sobibor constantly in Camp III and was there among others also supervisor of the Jewish working command. It is correct that Jews were gassed there. I sorted the Arbeitshäftlinge (working prisoners) into groups. After the gassings took place, a group of them had to empty the gas chambers. Another group took the corpses to the mass graves."
In July 1942 he was arrested for perjury during his divorce case. He was punished by an SS-court in Krakow on 19 December 1942 and sent to the SS-penal camp Matzkau near Gdansk. Shortly after the revolt in Sobibor he was called back to help dismantling the camp.
After Sobibor he was ordered to DAW (Deutsche Ausrüstungswerke) in Lublin.
For his services he was awarded the Iron Cross second class on 18 January 1945.
FATE:
Sent to Italy. After the war his wife declared him as dead. As he had a number of criminal offences to his name, he found it better to disappear off the records. He lived under the false name "Heinz Brenner", the name he went by at Hartheim. The justice department came to know of him and arrested him in May 1961.
Instead of a notorious mass murderer he professed to be a "fighter against partisans in the Lublin area".
During his trial he constantly maintained that there were no sick and cripple people executed in Sobibor - only when he was cross examined he admitted that everything was true.
During the first Hagen trial, he committed suicide shortly before his judgement was pronounced.
