Joseph Mengele
What did he acomplish? It seems like his experiments were unintelligent by the standards of modern medicine. Why did he chose to fly to brazil?
Re: Joseph Mengele
Because it was nice sunny weather
Re: Joseph Mengele
"Unintelligent"?? No doubt you meant to say "deranged" and "sadistic"?

Re: Joseph Mengele
Accomplish? He was a very weird, sick in the head, and calloused individual. To me, that would be asking "what did Jeffery Dahmer accomplish?"

Re: Joseph Mengele
I think "accomplish" may have been a poor choice of words. A better way to phrase that is "What useful results were obtained, if any?"
I'm not interested in learning anything about Mengele's method other than what I unfortunately already know, but research on hypothermia, hypoxia, diseases, and pharmacology using human subject yielded recorded data. I could be wrong but if I had to guess I'd say that the allies probably saved some his findings to further their own research.
And never forget, Mengele wasn't the only one guilty of this unfathomable activity. There were several more in the German program and the Japanese had a similar undertaking as well.

There was something about the results been kept in a hospital in the uk sometime ago in the UK press, not sure if it was a London hospital ?
Re: Joseph Mengele
The angel of death or Doktor Death accomplished nothing for medical science. He was a sadistic quack who specialized in terrorizing prisoners, especially mothers who had their children torn from their arms. He was a selector for those who were to be killed or tortured in heinous medical experiments. His crimes have been well documented. He did accomplish one thing: equating Nazi Germany forever with horrific medical experiments on helpless death camp inmates. That's quite an accomplishment.
Re: Joseph Mengele
He started with being a Captain in the SS. Later Mengele moved to Argentina.

Re: Joseph Mengele
^ ^ I'd have to see documented proof that results from nazi medical experiments utilizing live human subjects were completely disregarded by the Allies. Considering the Allies' enthusiastic acquisition of Germany's rocket program and assimilation of the Gehlen Organization ultimately into the CIA, I find it highly doubtful that the allies ignored EVERYTHING "Mengele & Co." researched. Known war criminals were hired by the US, UK, and I'd imagine the USSR not long after VE Day. It's a dirty little grey area that most preferred to pretend didn't exist.

Re: Joseph Mengele
As far as I know Dr. Death was the cognomen of Aribert Heim, the butcher of Mauthausen, a SS villain doctor as cruel and sadistic as Mengele.HaShomer wrote:The angel of death or Doktor Death accomplished nothing for medical science.

Instead of regurgitating the old crap about Dr. Mengele why not try to shed some light about his career prior to 1943 and his real activities at Birkenau?

Re: Joseph Mengele
To answer the OP -
1) Mengele accomplished nothing of research value. The guy was an MD/PhD, I wouldn't say 'unintelligent', but he was fundamentally a vicious antisemite, a sadist, and in a position of nearly absolute power at Auschwitz.
2) He fled to S America because he was one of the most wanted Nazi war criminals. EVERYONE at Auschwitz knew and feared him, and he presided over so many selections at the ramp in Birkenau that he was frequently named and placed at the selections by survivors. He is infamous for his experiments, but no less egregious was the fact that he presided over many gas chamber selections -- a responsibility that other Auschwitz physicians did not necessarily agree to do. No wonder he ran...

Re: Joseph Mengele
Most of what we know about Mengele comes from his assistant Dr. Miklos Nyiszli. If everything Nyiszli said about Mengele is true then why didn't Mengele have Nyiszli killed before he left Auschwitz on 17 January 1945? After all, Nyiszli was the main eyewitness to Mengele's alleged criminal activity. Instead he allowed Nyiszli to survive.
