Re: Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Video
Your video begins with an inaccuracy. 1.5 million did not die there (despite what the plaque says). According to the estimate currently accepted by the Museum, about 1.1 million died there, of them about 960,000 Jews. The plaque with 1.5m (George Wellers' estimate) was already outdated as it was created.
The current estimate is also a subject to revision. It is based on Franciszek Piper's assumption that there were only 25,000 Hungarian "transit Jews" (most of whom left the camp). We now know that there were about 110,000 such Jews. That is, not ~400,000 Hungarian Jews were gassed on arrival but about 320,000. That means that the death toll of 960,000 should be lowered accordingly and there were, ballpark, about 900,000 Jewish victims and about 1 million victims overall.

Re: Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Video
Yeah I agree. The Memorial video was created just after my visit using photos I had taken. On another thread as copied below I do mention 1.1 million as a closer figure after a little more research. But even that as you say was a further approximation.
Javey74 wrote:I did some research into Auschwitz and Auschwitz Birkenau on their reported figures, again they can only be approximate due to incomplete records.

Re: Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Video
No problem. I also visited Auschwitz about a month ago for the first time. Certainly an experience to remember.
Re: Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Video
Yeah, I remember hearing people saying that the birds don't sing there. When I went I must admit I never heard a sound. Going back to the video I've updated it to the more realistic estimate of 1.1 Million. Actually it had played on my mind a while back when I realised the initial caption was wrong after doing some further research, but I'd already uploaded it to a few areas, so I just left it.
You've now inspired me to change it once and for all. I'm actually surprised the management at Auchwitz-Birkenau have not updated the plaque themselves as it would confuse people when the guides are saying 1.1 Million and the plaque they are reading says 1.5 Million.

Re: Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Video
I guess they want to avoid negative publicity in order not to help the Holocaust deniers.

I think you may have a valid point there!Sergey Romanov wrote:I guess they want to avoid negative publicity in order not to help the Holocaust deniers.
