Walter Söffner or Schöffner Gestapo Hamburg
Good evening all,
I'm looking for confirmation of the name and any information of Walter Söffner or Schöffner.
He was born 29.01.1899 and served in the Hamburg and Augsburg Gestapo.
He may have died during August 1941.
Thanks

Hi Puck,
I guess you mean "Grudziądz" and "Ciechanów". Correct?

Re: Walter Söffner or Schöffner Gestapo Hamburg
I have Pol.Insp. Walter Gottfried Söffner, Abt. I A with Stapo Zichenau (unfortunately no dates).
Born 29.01.1899 in "Pr.Börucke" (i can't find such place, possibly spelling mistake in my source).

It´s not " "Pr.Börucke"but "Preußisch Börnecke" renamed into "Groß Börnecke" in Nov. 1950 and since February 2004 an urban district of the city Hecklingen in Saxony-Anhalt.

Re: Walter Söffner or Schöffner Gestapo Hamburg
We have the same problem using Polish spelling of towns, as with Czech towns.
There was no Gestapo office in Grudziadz (sorry about the accents) - but there was one in Graudenz.
ditto Ciechanow - Zichenau.
If I looked for a Gestapo official in German documents dated 1939-1945 for Grudziadz or Ciechanow there would none to be found. Can we stick to the towns that were, rather than today's usage.
As for Söffner: NS No. 3673981; SS No. 455764; promoted SS-Ostuf on 18 March 1943.
The NS No. is before 1 May 1937 (when all Govt officials were meant to join and means accepted NS ideology) and the SS No. looks a bit late, probably after 1941, which could mean he was commissioned as SS-Ostuf.
