Yugoslav War Crimes Trials of German Officials

I am looking into the names provided in the post below. If the men are the same as those in the list from the book Titos Kriegsgefangene, it would suggest the confirmation of death sentence was overruled.

Re: Yugoslav War Crimes Trials of German Officials

Leutnant Otto Blöss
Feldgendarmerie last commander des Zolls in Zagreb Feldkomandanture
death sentence by shooting 16.11.1949 in Belgrad
confirmation of the sentence 24.12.1949

Major Hans Wagner

Leutnant Gustav Heufing
7. SS-Gebirgs-Division "Prinz Eugen"
death sentence by shooting 05.12.1949 in Belgrad
confirmation of the sentence 26.12.1949

The following information comes from Kaltenegger Roland (titos kriegsgefangene)
The last 43 prisoners are released March 1953. All sentenced to life or death

Bloss. otto 9/11/01 oberstluit.
Hufing. gustav 31/12/94 oberstluit.

Regarding Friedrich Polte, I've him sentenced to death on 22-12-1946 and hanged on 24-1-1947(and not on 22-12-1946 as Ansata stated on page 11 from this thread). Who can confirm or deny that Polte died on 24-1-1947???

Greetings, Mike

Hello Ansata,
Thanks for the confirmation about his DoD on 24-1-1947.
Thanks for the extra info, although most of it I already had. I can add that in 1932 he joined the SA and in 1933 the SS. In 1934 he joined the Sicherheitsdienst and in 1936 he got appointed to Referent within the SD-Hauptamt. From ?? 1938 till ?? he was Leiter der HA II within the SS-Oberabschnitt 'Donau'.
Does someone has his party- and SS-number???

Thank you, Mike

It's rare that I ask a question on AHF but I have one now. Some 30-35 years ago, I met an old Hungarian gentleman who had been a captain in the Honvedseg and served in Russia during 1942 and early 1943. He told me a number of times that a Hungarian general, perhaps one that had been involved in the commission of war crimes in the Hungarian annexed portion of the Backa, i.e., the western part of the Vojvodina, had been tried in camera and executed by the Yugoslavs in 1945 or 1946, probably in Beograd. His trial and execution was noted in the papers there sometime later. What was not released was the method of execution. According to Hungarian veterans, the general was impaled alive on a sharpened stake and it took him two days to expire slowly and in great agony. I interviewed a number of other former officers of the Honvedseg during that time and everyone of them, all graduates of the Ludovika - the Hungarian West Point, told the same story and were absolutely certain that it was true. Does anyone know if this story is accurate?

Larry D. -- I heard a somewhat similar (in other words, atrocious) story, but it was to the effect that he was buried up to his neck in dirt and then had his head run over by a tank. This may be the fellow you have in mind:

Grassy, Joszef (1894-5.11.1946) [SS Waffen-Gruppenfűhrer, Feldmarschalleutnant of Hungary] -- Inspector of the Hungarian Air Force 1 Feb-1 Mar 1941; commander, 15th Hungarian Infantry Brigade 1 Aug 1941-1 Apr 1942; commander, 13th Hungarian Infantry Division 1 Apr 1942-15 Nov 1942; chief of training detachment to Hungarian Embassy 1943-1944; commander, 25th SS Division "Hunyadi" Oct 1944-Mar 1945; commander, 26th SS Grenadier Division "Ungaria" Mar-May 1945 {imprisoned by German authorities Jan-Mar 1944 after Hungarian protests over cruelty to his Hungarian troops; injured in car accident 6 May 1945; captured by American troops and extradited to Hungary Nov 1945; tried by a Hungarian court in Budapest on 8 Jan 1946 and sentenced to death for war crimes; extradited and convicted of war crimes by the Yugoslavs; sentenced to death by hanging by the Voivodina Supreme Court of Yugoslavia 31 Oct 1946 in proceedings regarding massacres in Jan 1942 at Novi Sad and Baka (NYT 1 Nov 1946:16:3); executed 5 Nov 1946 at Zsablyla, Yugoslavia (MacLean, Quiet Flows the Rhine p. 141; Waffen-SS Commanders I, pps. 205-6; Third Reich Factbook; not listed in Dienstaltersliste der Schutzstaffel der NSDAP [9 Nov 1944; Axis Biographical Research, Georges Croisier and Ken McCanliss, Allgemeine-SS and Polizei General Officer Casualty Listing, http://www.geocities.com/orion47.geo/CR ... alties.htm).}

Thank you for that, David. I am 95% sure that is the war crime I was referring to as it is the main one that occurred in that part of the former Yugoslavia that was occupied by the Hungarians. Grassy must have been the senior Hungarian officer on the scene and may have ordered the massacre on his own authority. If he was indeed executed in some gruesome fashion, then the impalation story may be true since that form of execution has an unfortunate history in that area dating back to the Ottoman conquest in the early 1500's. There is testimony in Nürnberg Case 7 (Southeast Case) of Chetniks and Partisans occasionally using that method on particularly hated enemies, so I would not rule it out in the matter of Grassy or whoever the general was.
