Hi Steve,

of course you are right - there were only investigations but no trial.

Hi Puck,

I have a few differences in the sentences :

Brejora 14 years (Emil Brejora 02.11.1902)
Starkens 14 years (Josef Starkens 05.08.1899 in Duren. Died in Prison 29.12.1947)
Zwinger 5 years ( Josef Zwinger 11.06.1896)

All the other names, dates, and sentences are the same as mine but I had no info on Müller and Dose. Were they in the same trial?

Can I ask your source

Regards

Hi Puck,

Thanks for the link to your source.
My source was in a book from the Yugoslav Govt. and it covered most of the major trials. I found it many years ago in The Imperial War Museum in London but of course it was not in English. However I have the dates of birth and sentences correct as per the book but who knows for sure?

Regards and thanks for your help in the past.

I have Leutgeb born in Waitzendorf (Niederösterreich). The British were looking for Leutgeb in Vienna as late as May 1946 before establishing he was held by the Russian occupying forces. Presumably they handed him over to the Yugoslavs. The question is why? What was the wartime connection of Leutgeb to Serbia, as he appears to have spent the entire war in Vienna.

Maybe he mistreated, tortured or killed Serbs in Austria?

Hi,

Lambert Leutgeb was Vienna Gestapo's chief expert on Serbian émigrés and Yugoslav workers in Austria, and also supplied at least one agent for intelligence work in Zagreb during the war.

My bet is that Yugoslavs wanted him primarily because of his knowledge of these matters and not for any crimes he committed; I assume he got ten years simply for being a member of the Gestapo.

Best,

Gaius

P.S. A photo of Leutgeb from good ol' times.
P.P.S. All info from "German Intelligence Service in Yugoslavia", 3,500+ pages limited-availability edition prepared by the Yugoslav State Security in late 1950s, based on captured documents and interrogations of prisoners like Leutgeb.

Congratulations, Gaius!! The below document is a REAL find and I am especially glad that you were the one who discovered it. Even after so many years since the war ended, I am very surprised the UDBA (or its successor) let you use it, copy pages from it or reproduce it.

Hi Larry,

great to see you around! Some background information on the above-mentioned edition: the authors are not named, but the most likely candidates are Slavko Odić and Slavko Komarica, former Partisan intelligence officers who went on to publish several books on WW2 in Yugoslavia.Although printed in fair numbers, the edition was treated as an internal document until the demise of Yugoslavia in early 1990s (every copy was numbered). From then on one could find it in libraries, but also buy it in flea markets or second-hand bookshops. Even though no one was supposed to care any more, funny things were still happening. For instance, I know of a retired policeman who needed a lot of convincing to finally let his copies be used by researchers. I also personally met a library employee who thought it wiser to consult with her boss before lending me the book stamped with "Official document. Keep in drawer". Mind you, all this was happening in the 2010s. :)

Take care,

G.

Thanks for that, Gaius. It shows that the former Yugoslavia and the follow-on countries were no different than Britain, the U.S. and most of the European countries in respect to declassification policies. In any event, the book must be a goldmine of interesting details not found elsewhere, including the Nürnberg Case VII transcript and documents. I am thinking that at 3,500+ pages it must be in at least 5 volumes. If I were 20 or 25 years younger, I would probably try and track down a copy, provided it's not written in Cyrillic!

Great to hear from you, stay safe and get the vaccination shots when you can. I had my first Pfizer in January and my second one last month.

Best,

Larry
