From 1987 to 1989, the government of Somali dictator Mohammad Siad Barre carried out a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Isaaq people of the Somaliland region of northern Somalia, which left 50,000 to 200,000 people dead. However, the genocide of the Isaaq people hasn't received much attention among most academics and experts on history's genocide, being overshadowed by the Rwandan genocide.
