Now, one has to picture the streets full of people, wagons, horse/ochsen/people drawn. Any free space a camping spot. Along the banks of the river Elbe, masses of people.

What a damned shame! I have never been there, but I imagine it was a beautiful city. I hope some of it has been restored.

Terribly sad. What a beautiful city destroyed for propaganda reasons that did nothing to change the outcome of the war.

A real pity.

I wonder how many other cities also looked like this years after the war ended?

Dresden was reconstructed, according to the original plans of old buildings by the German Democratic Republik.

It has been again subject to destruction by the flood of the Elbe River, during the summer of last year, 2002.

So far I know, the damages are actually under reparation, but this is so costly that the flood consequences are one of the reasons of the present financial and political crisis of the reunited Germany

I visited Dresden last year. Much of the old City remained by and large undamaged. So, Dresden still is a nice City to visit.

I still find it difficult to even try to comprehend what the victims of bombing raids suffered on both sides.

Some buildings of major importance were reconstructed, but not the shape of the historical city itself (see prague street). Dresden will never be the same as it was (like hundreds of german cities). We have lost a city of legendary beauty and also a part of our history

I talk calmly like"%80 of the city has been destroyed,140.000 died"
But when i see pictures like these... I cant control my self....
It is awfully sad :(
This picture may be offensive to some people, but i just wanted to show reality of war,

In the fire bombings of Hamburg and Dresden, civilians in bombshelters died from the severe heat and their skin literally started to melt. Pretty sick when you think about it.

Long time ago I posted a photo from an executions in an Einzatgruppen in Russia and Scoth Smith protested and required to Marcus actions against the thread.

I ask myself if Scoth will protest with this terrible photo too.

I would like to think not. Being this is a historical site, the postings and the pictures are for historical reasons and not to be destructive to anyone. In my opinion, if you want to hide history and also study it at the same time, one has a conflict. It is terrible to see these pictures, but it is a neccesity to see them. To understand history, the people, and a time, one must see it, read it, and understand it. I appreciate all your articles Helly. I have learned a lot from your knowledge.
