"Krema-wurst" as a Holocaust claim
Re: "Krema-wurst" as a Holocaust claim
Olere may very well have had mental problems, but his claims regarding sausage are not necessarily a manifestation of them. My parents were friends for years with a gentleman named Walter Peltz who was a survivor of Auschwitz and various other camps (http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/Holocau ... /Peltz.asp) He had told them on multiple occasions that the Germans had made corpses into sausage. We had always dismissed this (albeit not to his face) as simply a product of the camp rumor mill--like the soap, etc.--but had never heard it anywhere else, until I read about Olere. Still think it's just a rumor, but at least this might address some questions about Olere. Pressac's quote doesn't give any indication that Olere claimed to see this being done, only that it was done. It seems safe to say that this was part of the camp rumor mill--perhaps circulating in a smaller circle than the soap story, but nonetheless, something which Olere may easily have simply been told, presumed was true, and passed on, which is hardly unusual in an institution like Auschwitz. And, in the context of what he actually had seen and knew to be true, isn't so crazy after all.
