Hi Dan, Both Auschwitz & Birkenau (in the photo) camps were surrounded by a large Security area cleared out by the germans, all the original inhabitants were thrown off their land at the order of commandant Höss. This land was still farmed though, as Auschwitz was as well as being a Concentration & Death camp a very large Agricultural research station. At one time it was to be the agricultural center for Himmlers intended massive re-settlement of Ethnic Germans to the near east. The edge of the Security area was heavily guarded, both actual camps were far from prying eyes, best wishes, Phil.
