How do we know she believed the 700,000 figure to be true?

How do we know where she got it from?

It is close to the total number of Jews in the Hungary of 1944, and she might just as well have learned that figure after the war. Perhaps when she was preparing her testimony.

As a loyal Communist politician (a member of the French Assembly at the time of her testimony), she would certainly have wanted to maximise the number of victims of Auschwitz.

The fact is that she was given the chance to justify the figure she gave when presented with an alternative much lower figure supposedly derived from Eichmann. At that point she could have explained that the figure she gave was only an assumption on her part, and she could not swear as to its accuracy.

However, to have admitted that would have derogated from the image she had painted of herself as an expert on everything that happened, as a person with inside information. Therefore, she dodged the question with a diversionary tactic aimed at appealing to the Judges' bias against the veracity of information from the Gestapo.

As a loyal Communist apparatchik, she could not admit to being unsure or mistaken. And other loyal Communists (or ex-Communists) cannot admit that her testimony contained dishonest elements.

How do we know the opposite?

> It is close to the total number of Jews in the Hungary of 1944, and she might just as well have learned that figure after the war. Perhaps when she was preparing her testimony.

Of course she might. Or she might have heard that all the Hungarian Jews were to be deported to Auschwitz and did not know that the deportations were aborted.

> As a loyal Communist politician (a member of the French Assembly at the time of her testimony), she would certainly have wanted to maximise the number of victims of Auschwitz.

Blatant non sequitur.

> The fact is that she was given the chance to justify the figure she gave when presented with an alternative much lower figure supposedly derived from Eichmann. Doh! That probably means that she thought that she _could_ swear to its accuracy.

And loyal neo-Nazis and antisemites just like to smear Holocaust witnesses (esp. if they're Jewish or Communist).

Periodically, during the roll calls, the Aufseherin would choose some internees, who would be undressed and left in nothing but their chemises. Their coats were then returned to them. They were hoisted on to a truck and were driven off to the gas

chamber. A few days later the coats were returned to the Kammer (the clothing warehouse), and the labels were marked "Mittwerda." The internees working on the labels told us that the word "Mittwerda" did not exist and that it was a special term for the gases.
