Auschwitz completely abandoned by end of war?
Was Auschwitz completely deserted by the time the Russians arrived, and when was it totally evacuated? Were prisoners removed before the guards and officers? Was it an organized departure or were guards and officers just slipping away here and there?

Hello Beppo,
Completely empty wasn´t Auschwitz, there is pretty much famous
photos of Inmates, especially kids, told to be Mengeles twins, walking
with their nurses, also others showing their tatoos.
But most of the inmates was forced on deathmarches to other camps
in the west, to beginn with KL Gross Rosen and later Buchenwald and
other camps. The staff of Auschwitz accompied the inmates or where
transferred to other duties in other camps, as ex. SS-Hstuf Mengele
who was Lagerartz at KL Gross-Rosen before he went to hiding.

Rudolf Höss (1900-1947), SS Obersturmbanführer, Commandant of the concentration camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau from May 1940 to December 1943, and later Chief of Section D I in the main economic-administrative office of the SS in Berlin. The Supreme National Tribunal in Warsaw sentenced him to death on April 2, 1947. The sentence was carried out in Auschwitz-Birkenau on April 16, 1947, by hanging.

Google points to several sources which echo the above.
ie. that at least one nazi was held/executed at Auschwitz by the Polish government as late as April 1947.

Hello,
That doesn´t mean that they used the KL Auschwitz as the Soviets did with Sachsenhausen
or Buchenwald, Poland often executed the Warcriminals on thescene
of their
crimes, as Stroop who was hanged in the former Ghetto of Warzaw,
and noone will believe that the Ghetto was in use after the war...or?
Best regards,
Georg

You are quite correct. I merely pointed out thatGeorg wrote:Hello,

Auschwitz
While researching the fate of germans generals who died in captivity, I found the following entry
GL Paul Scheuerpflug 68. I.D. 00.08.1945 in Lazarett Auschwitz
It means that in August 1945, Auschwitz was used as POW's camp by the Polish authorities.
